Today we remember Thomas Melody, who passed away on 21st April 2011, aged 91.

Born on 26th August 1919 and raised in the fields of Mayo in the west of Ireland, Thomas was a man cut from a different cloth. A father of ten – eight boys and two girls – he worked tirelessly to provide for his family. Strong as an ox, with a heart just as big, he was the definition of hard work, resilience and loyalty.

He wasn’t just a grandfather… he was a guiding hand. Alongside his wife Eileen, he played a huge part in raising his second eldest grandson, Dayle – passing down the values that still live on in this pub today.

Ten years ago, when the Admiral Keppel was renamed The Farrier, it wasn’t just a name change… it was a tribute. A way of keeping Thomas’s spirit alive, in a place built on community, graft, and good people – everything he stood for.

And for those that may not know… the swinging sign outside isn’t just a design. It’s a photograph of Thomas himself, carefully turned into a digital image – a lasting reminder that he’s still very much part of this place, watching over it every day.

So today, we raise a glass to Thomas Melody.
A true family man.
A grafter.
And the heart behind The Farrier.

Never forgotten

After our team of walkers climbed Snowdon and raised an incredible £10,000 in 2024 we decided to give the walking boots a rest for a year — at our age it doesn’t come easy!

Handing over that £10k to Pilgrims was a proud moment, adding to the £14k raised for Talk it out when in 2023 the 10 Merry Men took on the Three Peaks.

This year, we’ve raised a cool £5,000 for the Sunflower Dementia Centre, part of Age UK Sandwich — a truly special local day centre supporting people over 50 living with dementia.

The Sunflower Centre provides a safe, secure and caring environment for those who need greater attention, stimulation and support than standard social day care can offer. With high staffing levels, music therapy, arts and crafts, plus lunch and refreshments included, it offers not just care — but dignity, companionship and meaningful daily activity.

It’s a service used by many of our Farrier customers’ families, which makes this cause especially close to our hearts. We truly appreciate the incredible work they do for local families every single day.

A massive thank you to our pool teams, darts teams and all our loyal customers — we appreciate every raffle ticket bought, every Quiz master’s Quiz ! every donation given and every bit of support shown. Together, we continue to make a difference in our community.

Onto the next Charity and Ben Nevis !!

Thank you for reading
