’Twas the Night Before Regatta
The Crab Men’s Vets – 181st Dartmouth Royal Regatta 🦀🚣🍺
’Twas the night before Regatta, and all through the town,
The bunting was flying, the b**rs going down.
The boats were all ready, the oars laid with care,
For the Crab Men’s Vets soon would be there.
They’d trained for this moment — well, once or twice,
Though a pint at The Crab always sounded more nice.
Their muscles were aching, their knees had seen years,
But nothing could stop them — except several b**rs.
The crew gathered round with a confident grin,
Discussing the tactics and how they would win.
“Keep timing! Pull hard! And whatever you do,
Don’t mention our backs — or the state of Crew Two!”
Their rivals were younger, all athletic and lean,
The fittest damn rowers that Dartmouth had seen.
But experience counts when you’re out on the Dart,
And the Crab Vets had wisdom… and plenty of heart.
The cox gave the orders: “Now listen, you lot,
Tomorrow we’re giving it everything we’ve got.
No moaning, no stopping, no reaching for b**r,
Until we’ve crossed that finish and everyone cheers!”
Then out from The Crab came a voice loud and clear:
“ONE LAST ONE, LADS — it’ll settle the fear!”
So training was finished in traditional style,
With another quick pint… that lasted a while.
They spoke of past Regattas, of glory and pain,
And promised tomorrow they’d do it again.
For age is a number, and Vets surely know,
It’s not how you start — it’s how hard you row!
So here’s to the Crab boys, the Men’s Vets crew,
To aching old shoulders and friendships held true.
To Dartmouth, the river, the roar from the quay,
And the 181st making history.
When morning arrives and they push from the shore,
They’ll straighten their backs and they’ll pull on the oar.
And Dartmouth will hear, from the river and pub:
“COME ON YOU VETS!
COME ON THE CRAB!” 🦀🚣♂️🍻
