The Fireshow is easily one of the best nights of the year in our city, but putting it right on Saturday, 31st October feels like a huge missed opportunity to back our local hospitality.
Our local council should be doing everything it can to support pubs, bars, restaurants, and village halls when it comes to running events and bringing people together. Hospitality everywhere is facing tough times, and the timing of major civic events plays a massive part in whether independent businesses actually benefit.
When Halloween lands on a Saturday, venues already have a packed house planned. Cramming the Fireshow onto the exact same night doesn’t magically give local bars extra square footage—doors hit capacity, queues build, and trade ends up getting turned away.
Holding the Fireshow on the following weekend instead would hand Carlisle two thriving Saturdays back-to-back:
Two cash-flow boosts instead of one: Spreading the dates creates two major trading peaks right before the quiet winter sets in, rather than leaving the following weekend flat.
Room for community venues to thrive: It gives local pubs, clubs, and village halls the breathing space to host their own Halloween parties and ticketed nights without competing directly against the biggest civic draw of the year.
A better experience for everyone: Families with young children can enjoy the fireworks and grab an early bite without battling late-night party crowds, gridlocked roads, and impossible taxi queues.
Our council has the power to shape the local calendar in a way that actively lifts up local enterprise. Spreading out our biggest nights means safer crowds, happier families, and double the chance to keep money in the pockets of our local businesses.
