The Four Candles

The Four Candles An experimental real ale brewery crammed into a cellar little more than 3m x 3m - and the results sold in the drinking area above.

No regular beers, no big-brewery products and at least one guest ale on offer. Biddenden ciders, wines and fruit juices, Canterbury cheeses, local pork pies. Pork scratchings sold by the half-pint. No lagers, no spirits, no piped music, no Sky TV, no wi-fi and we boast terrible mobile phone reception. So customers have to make their own entertainment. Be prepared to talk to the regulars because they will probably talk to you. (This is not a place for a romantic tete-a-tete). Small drinking area but somehow we always manage to pack one more in. Perhaps, next time, that one might be you.

The Four Candles Alehouse will be closing from New Year's Day.

After more than 13 years running Britain's Smallest Brewpub I have come to the difficult decision that now is the time to say “see you around” to the many wonderful friends who have made it all so worthwhile and who have created so many great Sowell Street sessions for all this time.

The downside has been that I have had far too little time to spend with my family - and my resolution is to put that right in 2026.

I do not yet know if the Four Candles will continue as a micropub in its present form. I hope it does. In any event, a new tenant will no doubt emerge in the near future. Watch this space.

In the meantime... Thank you all for your kindness and appreciation over the years. It has been a great privilege to get to know you all.

And a special thank you to our amazing staff who have done so much to make it the place it has been.
