🎤 LAST NIGHT’S OPEN MIC 🎤

WHAT A NIGHT!! 💛

The Golden Lion was absolutely PACKED again last night! Extra tables, extra chairs, people squeezed into every available corner… 😂

And what a brilliant mix of performances! Original songs, big singalong covers, thoughtful poetry, laugh-out-loud moments and all the usual Open Mic madness.

But my personal highlight?

The whole room waving candles in the air to ‘It Must Be Love’! 🕯️💛😂

Moments like that are absolute GOLD.

And once again, the most special thing was the audience. People genuinely listening, cheering each other on and wanting every performer to do well.

THAT’S what our Wednesday night community is all about. 💛

Now… one slightly disappointing statistic.

ONLY ONE WOMAN PERFORMER LAST NIGHT!!

And she was in a band with FOUR BLOKES!! 😂

COME ON LADIES! We’d been doing so well!

We want more women and femme-presenting performers taking the stage. More voices, more styles and a better balance makes for a much more interesting night.

Whether you’re an experienced performer or a nervous first timer, WE WANT YOU HERE!

The evenings are dark, the rain’s coming sideways, and stepping outside is becoming an increasingly questionable life decision.

BUT… there is an upside.

COSY PUB SEASON IS HERE! 💛

And there’s nowhere better to spend a Wednesday evening than tucked away in the candlelit room at The Golden Lion, surrounded by good people, good b**r and some awesome live music.

Every Wednesday we open the doors to Bristol’s wonderful collection of singers, songwriters, musicians, poets, comedians and whoever else fancies contributing to the Open Mic madness.

And what makes this night special isn’t just the talent on stage.

It’s the people in the room.

People who listen. People who encourage. People who cheer each other on. People who’ll happily share their slot so somebody else gets a chance to perform.

Over the years, we’ve built a proper little community around these Wednesday nights, and it’s something I’m incredibly proud of. 💛

Whether you’re a seasoned performer, a nervous first timer, or someone who just fancies escaping the weather with a pint and some live music, YOU ARE VERY WELCOME HERE.

🎤 WEDNESDAY NIGHT’S OPEN MIC! 🎤

Well, what a cracking evening that was! 💛

Firstly, apologies for the photos being a day late! I’m currently in the middle of moving house, so life is a bit of a logistical circus at the moment. 😂

So many fantastic performances, a brilliant atmosphere and a room full of people genuinely listening, encouraging and supporting each other.

A MASSIVE shout out to everyone who was kind enough to share their slots so we could squeeze a few more performers onto the list. I’ve said it before, but that’s what this night is all about. Making space for each other and supporting eachother. 💛

And some more GOOD NEWS on our ongoing mission to make the stage a little less bloke heavy! 😂💜

We had noticeably MORE WOMEN performing on Wednesday!

It’s brilliant to see that balance starting to shift. The more different voices, styles and perspectives we have on stage, the better the night becomes.

So to all the women who got up and performed, THANK YOU! And to all the women and femme-presenting performers who’ve been thinking about coming along…

🎤 OPEN MIC EVERY WEDNESDAY 🎤

Wednesday nights are getting a bit out of hand at The Golden Lion… and we’re absolutely here for it. 😂💛

The nights are drawing in, the candles are lit, the b**r is flowing, and every week we somehow manage to squeeze another ridiculous collection of talented humans into our little room.

And the best thing? You never quite know what’s going to happen.

One minute someone’s sharing a beautiful original song that’s got the whole room completely silent. The next, we’re all singing along to something ridiculous, listening to poetry, or witnessing something that defies any reasonable description. 😂

THAT’S OPEN MIC!

But underneath all the musical madness, there’s something that makes this night work. A room full of people who genuinely listen, encourage each other and want everyone to have their moment.

And whether you’re a seasoned performer, someone who’s been practising a few songs at home but hasn’t quite found the courage to get up yet, or you simply fancy a pint and some live entertainment…THERE’S A PLACE FOR YOU HERE. 💛

Last week we had a brilliant increase in women taking the stage, and we’d LOVE to keep that momentum going, so…. WOMEN AND FEMME-PRESENTING PERFORMERS OF BRISTOL… KEEP COMING!

Singers, songwriters, musicians, poets, comedians, first timers, old hands… bring your songs, bring your ideas, bring your friends! A more balanced line up makes for a more interesting night, and we want as many different voices up there as possible.

🎤 LAST NIGHT’S OPEN MIC 🎤

Firstly, I want to say how bloody brilliant it was to see MORE WOMEN TAKING THE STAGE! 👏💜

As anyone who’s been following these posts will know, we’ve been on a bit of a mission to make our Open Mic less bloke heavy. And last night was a great step in the right direction!

It’s not about taking anything away from the fellas. It’s about making room for more voices, more perspectives, more styles and more people. So to all the women who got up last night, THANK YOU! And to all the women and femme-presenting singers, songwriters, musicians, poets and comedians who’ve been thinking about coming along…

Don’t let the men have all the fun!! 😂💜

Now, onto the rest of the night…

It was absolutely brilliant to see some familiar faces returning who we haven’t seen in a while. There’s something great about seeing someone walk through the door after a few months away and immediately feeling like they’ve never left.

And equally, it was fantastic to see some brand new faces joining us, getting up on stage, meeting people and hopefully making a few new friends along the way.

That’s one of my favourite things about this night. People come for the music, but often it’s the people that keep them coming back. 💛

And once again, we had a cracking mix of performances, plenty of laughs, some beautiful moments and an audience that was properly engaged with whoever happened to be standing at the microphone.

That last bit is so important.

It takes courage to get up in front of a room full of people and share something, especially if you’re new to it. And having an audience that listens, encourages and genuinely wants you to do well makes all the difference.

No cliques. No egos. Just people supporting each other.

A massive thank you to everyone who performed, everyone who listened and everyone who helped make it another great night.

There’s something pretty special happening on Wednesday nights at The Golden Lion. 💛

Nearly nine years into hosting this thing, and somehow we’re still finding new faces, new voices, new songs and new ways to cram an increasingly ridiculous number of people into that little room. 😂

What started as a weekly night of people getting up and sharing a few songs has grown into a proper little community.

People come to perform. People come to listen. People come to meet friends, make new ones, have a few b**rs and enjoy whatever weird and wonderful stuff gets thrown into the Open Mic soup.

And the best bit?

People genuinely support each other.

Whether you’re a seasoned performer trying out something new, a nervous first timer taking that terrifying first step, or someone who just wants to sit back and enjoy the music, there’s a place for you here.

No cliques. No egos. Just a room full of people who want whoever’s standing at that microphone to do well. 💛

And we’re still on our mission to make open mics a little less bloke heavy! 😂💜

🎤 LAST NIGHT’S OPEN MIC 🎤

Another absolutely cracking night at The Golden Lion! 💛

What a turnout! Once again the room was buzzing, the performances were fantastic, and somehow we managed to squeeze even MORE acts onto the list than usual! 😂

A MASSIVE shout out to the people who were prepared to share their slots so we could get more performers up on stage.

That, for me, is exactly what this Open Mic is about.

People supporting each other. Making space for each other. Making sure as many voices as possible get the chance to be heard. 💛

And on that note, I’ve been thinking…

Next month will mark NINE YEARS since I started hosting this Open Mic.

NINE BLOODY YEARS!? 😂

And I can genuinely say it’s still an absolute honour to host it.

To see so many people continuing to turn up, week after week, bringing their songs, stories, ideas, talents and enthusiasm… and to see the night still thriving after all this time, is something I never take for granted.

Whether you’ve been coming for years, you’ve only just discovered us, or you simply come along to listen and support, you’re all part of what makes it special. 💛

It was lovely to see a few more female voices taking the stage last night! As we know, Open Mics can be a bit bloke heavy, and we’re determined to keep changing that.

Which means we’re entering PRIME Golden Lion Open Mic territory.

Dark outside, cosy candle lit room inside. Good b**r, good music, good people… GREAT VIBES. 💛

Every Wednesday we fill the room with singers, songwriters, musicians, poets, comedians and whatever else gets thrown into the Open Mic soup.

Some have been performing for years. Some are getting up in front of people for the very first time. Some just want to sit back with a pint and enjoy the night.

ALL are welcome.

And whichever camp you fall into, you’ll find a room full of people who want whoever is standing at that microphone to do well. No cliques. No egos. Just our Wednesday night community. 💛
