🌍 DID YOU KNOW? 🌍

The Roma flag was officially adopted at the First World Romani Congress in 1971 and is now recognised as a symbol of Roma identity, heritage and unity around the world.

But what do the colours mean?

🔵 Blue represents the sky, freedom and spirituality.

🟢 Green represents the earth, nature and life.

🔴 The 16-spoked wheel represents movement, freedom and the historical journey of Roma people. It also reflects the Roma people's origins in India, where a similar wheel, known as the Ashoka Chakra, appears on the Indian flag 🇮🇳

Today, the Roma flag is a powerful symbol of pride, resilience and cultural identity, bringing together Roma communities across many countries and traditions.

When many people think of Roma history, they often picture colourful horse-drawn wagons known as vardos. These beautifully crafted homes on wheels became closely associated with Romnichal Roma and other travelling communities in Britain during the 19th and early 20th centuries ❤🤍💙

More than just transport, vardos were works of art. Skilled craftsmen decorated them with painted designs, carved woodwork, brass fittings, and cleverly designed living spaces. They reflected pride, identity, and exceptional craftsmanship.

However, Roma life across Europe was diverse. While the vardo became a symbol of travelling life in Britain, many Roma groups lived in different ways. Some, such as the Kalderash and Lovari, travelled with horses, carts, and caravans as they moved for work and trade. Others lived in houses, villages, and settled communities throughout countries such as Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, and across the Balkans. 🇸🇰🇸🇮🇭🇺🇷🇴🇨🇿

Traditional occupations such as metalworking, horse trading, music, woodworking, and market trading often shaped how and where Roma families lived. Communities adapted to local conditions while maintaining their culture, language, and traditions.

Over time, changing laws, industrialisation, urbanisation, and modern lifestyles transformed these ways of life. Today, most Roma people live in modern homes, but the stories, traditions, and craftsmanship of the past remain an important part of Roma heritage.

The vardo remains one of the most recognised symbols of travelling life in Britain and a reminder of the resilience, creativity, and adaptability of Roma communities throughout history ✊️

🌍💙 Happy Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month! 💙🌍

Today marks the beginning of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month, a time to celebrate the rich cultures, histories, traditions and contributions of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities across the UK and beyond.

At Connecting Roma C.I.C, we are proud to stand alongside our communities, recognising the strength, resilience and achievements of Roma, Gypsy and Traveller people, while continuing to challenge discrimination and promote understanding, inclusion and equality.

This month is an opportunity to share our stories, celebrate our heritage, honour those who came before us and inspire future generations to take pride in who they are.

To all our Gypsy, Roma and Traveller friends, families, partners and supporters – we wish you a wonderful and meaningful GRT History Month.
"Our history, our culture, our pride."
