One person suggests a night out. Someone else mentions Neil Diamond. Before long, the plan has turned into a full live celebration of five decades of remarkable music. 🎤

In the 1950s, cinemas suddenly had a new rival - the television.

As more families brought TV sets into their homes, cinemas had to persuade people that staying in simply couldn't compare with a night out at the pictures.

And here in Blackburn, the Empire was right in the middle of that changing world.

By 1960, audiences at the Empire could see films including "The Pure Hell of St. Trinian's", starring Joyce Grenfell, George Cole and Sid James, while cinema advertising urged people to leave the television behind and enjoy the big-screen experience instead.

More than 60 years later, perhaps the argument hasn't changed all that much - stay at home and watch something on a screen, or head out and share an experience with an audience.
