The Black Box turned 20 this year and since 2006 we have been dedicated to providing a safe, welcoming and entertaining space for every single person who comes through our doors.

The real prize itself is witnessing the joy, the celebration and the flourishing of all members of the LGBTQIA+ community who visit us and who perform and showcase their vital work in the space we are proud to share.

Our director, Kathryn McShane was representing The Black Box last night at the 2026 Mercury Prize in Newcastle.🏆 ✨

As a grassroots, independent venue, it’s incredible to be in a room championing and celebrating live music and the musicians and industry who make it, so many of whom rely on getting their start and finding their feet in venues of a similar size to The Black Box and Green Room across the UK and Ireland. What an amazing night.

Mercury-shortlisted and globally acclaimed artist, Fergus McCreadie performs Flight Pass – a new work for classical piano trio.
Inspired by his homeland landscapes and narratives, ‘Flight Pass’ takes its title from one of McCreadie’s favourite photographs featuring a mid-air black winged kite and his offspring fighting over their prey.

‘Flight Pass’ extends McCreadie’s musical language into a new chamber setting while retaining the melodic clarity, rhythmic lift and storytelling that defines his music.

Catapulted into the spotlight with his 2022 Mercury nominated album ‘Forest Floor’, McCreadie has connected deeply with audiences worldwide, including renowned film maker Spike Lee, who has featured his music in recent works.

A real-life mother and daughter set out on a road trip from the windswept beaches of Donegal to a small village in southern Italy, searching for traces of a forgotten history, and for a way to understand each other.
The journey begins on the beaches of Donegal, where the bodies of Italian immigrants washed ashore after the sinking of the Arandora Star. Many had lived in Northern Ireland for decades, running ice cream parlours and fish-and-chip shops, before being classified as “enemy aliens” and interned during the Second World War. Today, almost no one remembers them.

Blending live performance, documentary film and live electronic music and performed in English, French and Italian with integrated subtitles, ALIENS weaves together their own story with those of Italian immigrants in Northern Ireland and present-day migrants, activists and strangers encountered along the way. As they travel across borders, languages an generations, the journey becomes a meditation on migration, inheritance and and those who live in between: the aliens.
