Delighted to welcome our pals The Shrub back to The Green Room this Saturday (27/6) for another evening of lowtempo listening from 7pm.

This instalment features a solo set from Paddy McKeown ( Córas Trio )

is a Belfast based guitarist, multi-instrumentalist and composer. He works at the seams of Irish traditional, electroacoustic, improvised and experimental music. Paddy is a member of Córas Trio and runs Coracle Records on which he released his first solo album The Good Step in 2020.

Mike Reed’s Separatist Party

Mike Reed’s Separatist Party first convened in early 2022. Spearheaded by Reed (drummer, bandleader, and composer), the band is a true supergroup featuring some of the most creative figures in Chicago’s booming music scene – cornetist Ben LaMar Gay, poet & spoken word artist Marvin Tate, along with the members of Bitchin Bajas (multi-instrumentalists Rob Frye, Cooper Crain, and Dan Quinlivan).

The Separatist Party sound draws upon a raft of influences, weaving together traditions and practices within the world of groove, to forge something entirely new. You’ll hear elements of Don Cherry’s groundbreaking Organic Music Society, the ecstatic fire of Pharoah Sanders, the cycling minimalism of Terry Riley, the motorik rhythms of Krautrock, the exploratory tones of Sun Ra, and the clipped soul of vintage Ethiopian jazz. The result is a propulsive brew that says plenty about the turbulent world we find ourselves in, while somehow remaining firmly positive.

Outside of the Separatist Party, Reed has long been a community-builder, both through the making and presenting of music. He is a founder of Chicago’s Constellation venue (an integral part of the city’s cultural ecosystem) and the Pitchfork Music Festival. He is also a member of the legendary AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians).
We cannot wait to welcome this exceptional slice of Chicago to Belfast for the first time. It’s a special one!

Now a monthly staple in the Black Box’s calendar. The Black Box presents a night of Open Decks. Open to all skill levels (as long as it’s not your very first go, and you know your way around the decks), genres and abilities, Our Open Decks night is there to give you the opportunity to perform live in front of an audience, whether that’s to try out new tracks, or get your stuff out there for the first time.

We’re delighted and humbled that joins the party to oversee and to offer guidance and advice to all aspiring DJs who have signed up.

The night is designed to be a platform for any up and coming DJ’s and is not a workshop, so whilst there is someone on hand to look after the night, participants will not be instructed on how to use the kit. Those DJing must also play to the room, i.e. play a suitable style of music based on the audience; Something which is a key skill to have as a DJ.

Other than some basic DJing experience, we ask that you bring your own music, as well as some mates while you’re at it!
