After having time to process the loss of yet another Atherstone icon yesterday , we lost a dear friend of ours, a true gentleman, Billy Yeatman.
We wanted to write this tribute to Billy.
Yesterday was a hard day at the Legion. So many tears, sad faces, people looking lost and shocked because the Legion had lost someone who was a big part of our community, our Legion family. Many stories were shared. Billy was definitely one of the main characters, one of the ring leaders round the big table. We even brought him his own captain’s chair, and that will always be Billy’s chair.
When him and Graham were in together and the cards came out and the racing Channel was on, it was always going to be a funny but eventful day. Billy was a man of few words, but when he spoke, it was always something funny, something on the lines of, “Vince, you’ve backed another donkey again,” as he shook his head.
We had a lot of time for Billy, in fact, all the time in the world. We even booked a Freddie act for Bill’s birthday, which he was so grateful of, well, after anyway, as when the act walked in, not in his costume, Bill said, “That’s not Freddie,” shaking his head as he did.
Obviously, there’s not a Freddie better than our Billy anyway, but 5 pints later, Billy was soon up to his tricks, and there he was, no top yellow jacket, going for it. I think even the act thought he was upstaged, but he loved it and was truly thankful, continuously shaking our hand saying I owe you one , but we did it because of how we felt about him. We thought highly of Billy and all his family and alway will.
He was a true grafter. Even at the age of 70, he was still grafting away, popping in for a pint on his way home , and I know the first thing Billy would of said when he got to those pearly gates was, “Anyone got any work?”
We will miss you, Billy. Truly, a big part of the Legion has gone, but your memory will forever remain with us and everyone that had the pleasure of being in your company. We will doing something in Bill’s memory, as he deserved that and so much more
Our thoughts go out to Sue, Ricky, Ben, Doris, Doc and Robbie and the whole family. We think highly of you all and are here if you need anything at all.
God bless you, Bill.
Your mate, my mate, everyone’s mate, Billy Yeatman.
All our love, Nick, Jamie, Deb and Michelle
