The Sussex Ox

The Sussex Ox The Sussex Ox is a family owned country pub, with its own farm. With a focus on quality, hearty dishes served in a relaxed, welcoming environment.

Nestled amongst the beautiful South Downs The family owners of the pub also own a farm in the nearby countryside, so we are able to use our own beef, lamb, potatoes, and more for the daily menu. We take locally sourced to the next level, being able to trace produce from start to finish, resulting in delicious seasonal menus.

Welcome Trottingden Regent 15th 🐮

Steve takes us out on the morning drive around the farm.

We’re checking on a group of pedigree Sussex cows that have calved over the last few weeks - healthy calves on the ground and the cows looking very pleased with themselves in the sunshine.

They’ll be introduced to the bull next week, which means next year’s calves should arrive in April.

The pasture is looking beautifully dry and the skylarks are out in force, which makes everything feel rather idyllic.

Of course, ask any farmer and they’ll still tell you the same thing: we could really do with some rain.

Just 20 minutes old and already finding their feet - a little unsteady at first, but it doesn’t take long.
Out here on the South Downs, just over the hill from the Sussex Oaks, this is where it all begins. Dry, south-facing fields, a bit of spring sunshine, and instinct doing what it’s always done.
Around 500 lambs on the ground so far. A few need a helping hand, but most are up and away before long.
A small glimpse into lambing season - simple, honest, and part of the story behind every plate.
