Nestled amongst the beautiful South Downs The family owners of the pub also own a farm in the nearby countryside, so we are able to use our own beef, lamb, potatoes, and more for the daily menu. We take locally sourced to the next level, being able to trace produce from start to finish, resulting in delicious seasonal menus.

What’s been happening on the farm this month?

1 - An in-calf heifer REALLY enjoying the autumn sunshine on the downs at Jevington

2 - Grading lambs at Jevington ready for a store sale at Hailsham Market next week. The lambs with woolly topknots are Southdown cross Suffolk/Mules the lambs with black topknots are Suffolk cross North Country Mules

3 - A rare body of water on the Downs in which the cattle can enjoy their reflection

4 - A group of red Sussex cattle enjoying the autumn sunshine - this time a group of 19 cows with their calves on the downs at Wannock.

5 - Spectacular autumnal sky over the conservation grazing marshes

6 - A very traditional sight: red Sussex cattle grazing and basking in the late autumn sunshine on the Pevensey Marshes. In the background the ruin of a Norman castle. ‘Red’ cattle were observed in the area in chronicles at the time of the Norman Conquest in 1066. See if you can spot some in the Bayeuax Tapestry currently on show at the British Museum and let the Sussex Ox know!

A Farmer’s Diary - No.2: I was doing so well...

A solar-powered bike, a low-carbon lookering round and then one photo of a rhum baba brought it all crashing down.

WE’VE GOT CATTLE EGRETS NOW…

Apparently, you can farm in Sussex for 45 years and still expect the occasional surprise.

Stephen Carr, owner and farmer here at The Sussex Ox, spotted two rather unexpected visitors among the cattle over the August Bank Holiday.

Cattle egrets. Originally from the tropics. Now happily following our Sussex cattle around the farm.

Climate change is bringing some rather unexpected characters to the countryside. Stephen’s latest farmer’s diary takes a look at what he’s seeing, from Jersey Tiger moths and Wasp Spiders to these beautiful new arrivals.
