📍PARIS — On Pakistan’s Defence Day this Sunday, the Dissident Club collaborating with concerned Pakistanis in France held an evening of testimony as part of its latest initiative: Dissident Public Gatherings, bringing together representatives from 12+ countries to challenge the official commemoration of the Pakistan armed forces on 6th September.

Organizers said the date was chosen to highlight what speakers described as recent Pakistan Army killings: more than 100 civilians in Kashmir and more than 500 civilians killed in bombings in Afghanistan this year.

French, Pakistani, Indian, Afghan, Kazakh, Swiss and American participants, among others, highlighted that military pageantry in Islamabad should not obscure civilian deaths across the region. Speakers from Afghanistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir described raids, protest crackdowns and cross-border strikes. European participants said Western governments had treated the record as an inconvenience rather than a human-rights file.

Participants urged the European Union, the United Nations and Western capitals to investigate the allegations, impose meaningful scrutiny on Pakistan’s military establishment and stop treating the country as exempt from accountability. Silence, they said, had become a form of permission.

The Dissident Club, founded in Paris by exiled Pakistani journalist Taha Siddiqui, said Dissident Public Gatherings would continue as a forum for witnesses the official narrative leaves out.

We were thrilled to hear from writer and activist David Campbell about his experience imprisoned on Rikers Island, and to welcome a mix of familiar and new faces behind the mic. From funeral homes to fish and chips, our writers’ creativity never disappoints!

Calling all wordsmiths! 📣The Dissident Salon is back on 1 September, just in time for la rentrée! Dust off your summer words, polish your pieces and join us every Tuesday at The Dissident Club for a night of poetry, prose and provocation. The fall 2026 edition of the Dissident Salon will be hosted by journalist & writer Faith E. Pinho.

The Dissident Salon is a weekly gathering for poets, writers and provocateurs, in keeping with the rich history of international literary salons in Paris and the Dissident Club’s mission as a home for dissidents worldwide. As usual, the salon features a guest performer, followed by an open mic for local writers to share their work. This season, we’ll introduce an additional generative writing workshop one Tuesday a month, as an expansion of our communal creative space. We are excited for the fall edition of the vibrant literary community cultivated by Alissa Leeds. We’ll see you at the microphone!
