Edition Hawara launches its new sublabel Hawara International with a listening party dedicated to its debut release: Takashi Shima's For Light Tanning, part of the Sun Tan Club series.

Originally produced by Shima — keyboardist of the band Piper — the record was designed for a very specific purpose: the pursuit of the perfect summer tan. Released with tanning instructions, oil recommendations and a promotional tie-in with Hawaiian Tropic, it drifts between ambient, new age and lifestyle soundtrack music, built as an elegant backdrop for beaches, pool parties and other seasonal rituals.

Long forgotten outside a small circle of collectors, For Light Tanning returns as a strikingly thorough document of late-1980s leisure culture — an album that leaves little room for ambiguity about its intended use. Whether it actually improves your tan remains, to this day, unverified.

Join us at Unkompress Listening Bar for a full album playback & DJ sets by the label owners, presented by Edition Hawara & Hawara International.

DJ Set starts at 6pm, active Album Listening at 8:30pm

We’re settling into October.

As we move into autumn, nights get longer, the room feels warmer, and there’s a little more time to settle in and stay a while.

Wednesdays continue as our weekly gathering around music… bring a record, follow the theme, or simply come along and listen.

Thursday + Friday, we slow things down. Records from our collection all evening, something good to sip… w**e, tea or zero percent. And space to catch up with friends, take a pause, or just spend some time with us.

Saturdays bring musical hosts to the room, including our own Smugsie on the 10th and the final residency session from Avec Plaisir on the 17th. The residency finales have become some of our favourite nights: great music, a full room and a little bit of magic.

Sundays are for listening. Four albums, played in full, including a special session with Hawara International on the 11th for the vinyl release of Takashi Shima’s Sun Tan Club For “Light Tanning”, accompanied by a DJ set.

Alongside our regular rhythm, October also brings a couple of special presentations: No Room For Squares on October 1 and Hainbach on October 8.

Open Wed–Fri from 18:00 · Sat–Sun from 14:00

Come for a pause. Stay for the music.

MARIO VERANDI — FACE AGAINST SKY
LP presentation + artist talk

Argentinian, Berlin-based composer, musician and producer Mario Verandi joins us for an intimate presentation of Face Against Sky, released on play loud! productions.

Verandi’s work lives somewhere between ambient, classical and experimental electronic music — cinematic in atmosphere, but difficult to neatly classify. His long-standing fascination with blurring musical genres has shaped a deeply personal sound world, where classical influences bring a sense of mystery and experimental electronics introduce unpredictability, texture and unexpected turns.

For this special evening, we’ll listen to Face Against Sky together, followed by a conversation with Mario about the album, his process and the ideas behind the music. We’ll hang out afterwards, playing records until closing.

We’ll also raffle a copy of the LP among those attending.

JAPANESE MUSIC MEETS REGGAE — Yuzo Iwata at Unkompress

There’s something special about the way Yuzo plays.

A true selector in every sense, he puts an incredible amount of thought — and himself — into his sessions. Give him four hours and he’ll go deep into his collection, finding connections that always feel distinctly his own.

For this one, Yuzo dug into his Japanese heritage, moving through 80s Kayōkyoku, New Wave, Min’yō and Jazz, with reggae weaving its way through the selections. 45s throughout, alongside several records connected to his newly released compilation on Sound Metaphors.

It was one of those nights we love at Unkompress… moments of focused listening, attention-grabbing tracks, conversations and track IDs passing around the room, and Yuzo taking the music wherever it needed to go.

Full session now live on YouTube.

Yuzo Iwata returns this Saturday for the final session of his 2026 residency at Unkompress.

Last night at Unkompress — two pre-release listening sessions for Actress’s Radical Frame.

Two full rooms. Familiar faces and new ones, a record giveaway, and a room that came to listen. Both sessions ending with applause as the final track faded out.

Thank you Ninja Tune for trusting us with the music, and Actress for creating it.

Radical Frame goes straight into the Unkompress collection. We’ll be revisiting this one very soon.
