Beck goes back a long way for us. From first discovering “Loser” to “The New Pollution” a few years later, his music has been part of our listening world for a long time.

So getting to host a listening session for his new album at Unkompress feels a little like things coming full circle.

On Thursday, September 17, we’ll listen together from beginning to end through the Unkompress sound system.

Downtempo to house, ambient to ethereal Italian post-punk, reggae, drum & bass and plenty we couldn’t quite put a name to.

Actress — Pre-Release Listening Session

Two days ahead of its official release, we’ll be listening to the forthcoming Actress album on Ninja Tune in full at Unkompress.

We’re honored to be one of five venues worldwide hosting a pre-release listening — alongside New York, Los Angeles, Paris and Barcelona — and one of the first places to hear the album before its release.

Two listening sessions across the evening:

Free entry

Very limited capacity. First come, first served — arriving early is recommended. Once we reach capacity, we won’t be able to admit additional guests for the session.

Peter Gall — Drum Seeds
LP Release Listening Session

We’re very happy to welcome Berlin-based drummer and producer Peter Gall to Unkompress for a first listen of his new album, Drum Seeds, out September 4 on Compost Records.

Built around drums, percussion, analog synths and keys, Drum Seeds moves somewhere between jazz, ambient, Kraut, breakbeats and club music. It’s raw, rhythmic and deeply personal. A perfect match for our intimate setting!

For the evening, we’ll listen to the record together, in full, on vinyl, with Peter joining us in the room for a talk and Q&A.

One for the books.

We knew this would be a special evening, but we didn’t quite expect this.

A packed house for our pre-release listening of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Beauty (and one of the busiest listening sessions we’ve had at Unkompress). People sitting in front of the system, filling the back of the room, eyes closed, volume up, completely immersed in the music.

So many of you came that unfortunately we couldn’t fit everyone inside. For those who missed the first session, we decided to do it all over again at 22:00.

The second listen had its own feeling entirely… a little more room, late at night, candles lit, and Beauty filling the space once again. The system sounded incredible, the music full and dynamic. Two very different listens, both equally special in their own way.

More than anything, it was beautiful to see the Berlin community show up with so much love and appreciation for Mr. Sakamoto and his music. Thank you to everyone who came, listened, and shared the evening with us. And apologies again to those we couldn’t get inside.

A special day for Unkompress, and definitely one for the books.

Wednesdays, we open things up.

From our weekly BYOV to a special takeover with NoNation Studios from London, August is all about sharing records, new ideas, new releases, and listening together.

This month is packed with special sessions: the pre-release listening of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Beauty, the return of our Japanese grillmaster SAKANA.BERLIN alongside Tokyo-based selector Jini, No Room For Squares is back with another genre-defying album, and Peter Gall celebrating the release of his new album with us.

Saturdays welcome selectors from Tokyo, the UK, and around Germany, while Sundays bring us back to the album - with intimate listening sessions, a special live performance, and records worth spending time with.

Ryuichi Sakamoto — Beauty
Album Listening Session

On Thursday, August 7, we join listening bars around the world for an advance listening session celebrating the forthcoming reissue of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s Beauty.

Originally released in 1989, Beauty captures Sakamoto at one of his most adventurous moments, bringing together influences from across cultures into a deeply personal and forward-looking work. It remains one of the most ambitious recordings in his catalog.

For us, this evening feels especially meaningful. Over the years we’ve gathered around Sakamoto’s music for dedicated listening sessions, and now, to share a pre-release listening experience of one of his most visionary albums a month before its official release feels like a full-circle moment. We couldn’t be more excited to present it!

We’ll experience the album in full on our hi-fi system, with a limited number of exclusive 2LP editions available to purchase on the night.

Listening begins at 19:00.
Doors open at 18:00.

No ticket required. We simply ask everyone to respect the listening environment and keep conversations to a minimum during playback.

This past week’s bring-your-own-vinyl was fun! Guests came through and represented with the Brazilian vinyl heat and sounds from around the globe.
