Told y’all I’d be more on the ball for next week! Listening to Stevie Winder is always a happy place for me, works for hit and rainy weather. Since we’re getting a bit of both felt fitting to build a night around one of the most peerless artists to ever do it. Stevie signed with Motown Records at age 11 and became the youngest solo artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 at age 13 with “Fingertips.” At 21 he signed a new contract with Motown that gave him complete control of his records (highly uncommon at the time) with that control he gave us Talking Book, Innervisions, Songs in the Key of Life, selling over 128 million albums and winning 25 Grammy’s along the way. He mastered the piano, harmonica, and drums entirely by ear and played most instruments on those classic 70s albums himself. And in case you forgot, he’s been blind almost his entire life. He was among the first to use electronic instruments and massive modular synthesizers in mainstream funk and soul, helping change the genre’s sonic landscape forever. I still have the Casio SK-One I got when I was 8 years old after I saw him play one on TV. We’re gonna be celebrating his impact with a lot of his records and some contemporaries as well as some music that still has his influence in it.
Listening bars are venues where the focus is on high-quality music listening, often on vinyl, played through audiophile-grade sound systems. Think dim lighting, curated records, no DJs yelling over the mic - just pure sound. Listening bars today are about slowing down, listening deeply, and connecting through music - kind of like drinking with your ears
