Modern Cosmology is a sleek, strange, and groove laden band that feels like a radar ping in a lucid dream. Stereolab front woman Laetitia Sadier floats above Mombojó’s elastic rhythm section with that cool, precise detachment she does so well, turning the whole record into something hypnotic and a little dangerous.

What Will You Grow Now? (2023) is where Modern Cosmology really locks in: sharper, more intimate, and more hypnotic. Laetitia Sadier’s voice drifts through Mombojó’s grooves like their project moves through pop, experimental and Brazilian genres. This record hits harder on vinyl because the album needs room to breathe and seduce. The low-end warmth, the analog texture, and the side-to-side pacing make the songs feel less like files and more like a living set, with each track landing like a slow reveal. This a record to be played start to finish that will open up speakers and sound-systems with its sheer musicality.

The magic that makes this album work is the Paris-in-Brazil chemistry: Sadier’s cerebral edge meets Mombojó’s loose, Brazilian psych-pop pulse, and neither side gives an inch. It sounds collaborative in the best way. Not tidy, not overworked, just sharp, fluid, and quietly electric. On vinyl, the collaboration gains even more presence. Modern Cosmology brings out the texture in the groove and the weight in Sadier’s phrasing, turning What Will You Grow Now? from a great record into a full-body high.

For ECC 005, we’re plugging into David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ (1999), a paranoid, slippery thriller where virtual reality, espionage, and body horror converge in a late-’90s vision of technology. Starring Jude Law, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Willem Dafoe.

This month's conversation takes a closer look at Cronenberg, beloved Can-con icon and master of body horror. We'll be covering the evolution of his work, and the particular anxieties that make his films feel so uniquely unsettling.
