Our next Wednesday Listening Session will be introduced by Ellen Vanhove:

LOW - HEY WHAT (Sub Pop US - 2021)

HEY WHAT is about finding beauty and meaning amid chaos, pain, and uncertainty. Its sparse voices and enormous, distorted sounds create a tension between vulnerability and overwhelming noise. The album feels almost spiritual: human fragility confronting a world that is difficult to understand, yet still offering moments of grace and hope.

Musically it combines Low’s trademark slowcore with ambient electronics, experimental rock, and noise. Its slow tempos, sparse arrangements, and haunting harmonies are contrasted with huge walls of distortion, synths, glitches, and abrasive sounds. The tension between the intimate, fragile vocals and the overwhelming production is central to the album, creating the feeling of music constantly breaking apart and reforming. Despite its experimental nature, the songs remain deeply melodic and emotionally direct.

This Friday we commemorate the 9/11 event that took place 25 years ago, with a theme night dedicated to New York City.

This is a tribute to a city and its inhabitants that are tough and resilient. Its nervous energy has fuelled numerous musical trends and nurtured countless creative musicians.

Think: jazz, bebop, Broadway show-tunes, salsa/latin, disco, early hip hop, punk, post-punk/no wave, house, experimental/minimalism,...

And: Monk, Charlie Parker, Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Grandmaster Flash, Run-D.M.C., Nas, Wu-Tang Clan, Brill Building pop, Tin Pan Alley, Fania records, Salsoul records, Paradise Garage, Studio 54, Velvet Underground, New York Dolls, Laura Nyro, Lou Reed, Mink Deville, Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Strokes, Liquid Liquid, ESG, Konk, John Cage, Phillip Glass, Steve Reich, Moondog, Arthur Russell, and the list goes on and on and on.....

So, we will have a night of eclectic music made in, or closely associated with New York City. You are invited to bring your personal favourites of quintessential New York records to spin alongside Vincent Mouton, Prosse and Jeroen Vermeersch. Don't hesitate, participate!

This Thursday Pre-release Listening Session with meet & greet is:

UNDER THE REEFS ORCHESTRA - WILLIWAW (Capitane records BE - 2026)

A sonic-minded power trio driven by obsessive, biting riffs and asymmetrical sonic cycles. Inspired as much by 19th-century French chamber music as by Jim O'Rourke or Moondog. UNDER THE REEFS ORCHESTRA blends hypnotic jazz, cinematic textures and raw energy into a sound much bigger than a trio. Featuring Clément Nourry on guitar, Marti Melia on saxophone and Jakob Warmenbol on drums, their music leads the listener into a trance among underwater volcanoes.

With WILLIWAW, their third album, Under The Reefs Orchestra opens a new chapter. Blending surf jazz, cinematic rock and hypnotic trance, the Brussels trio delivers a free-flowing, organic and deeply immersive work, driven by the breath of improvisation.

Our kind of shizzle! Come and check out this exciting band. Meet the musicians and get a signed copy of their engaging new album!

Aftrwards they will be spinning a vinyl selection exploring the album's wider musical universe, from Moondog to International Anthem, through Miles, Kamasi, UK jazz, cinematic sounds and the Belgian scene.

Hush hour:
* Doors 17.00, needle drop 20:00
* Silent listening for the length of the main record, a selection of related records will be played before and after by the artist!
* Free entrance - limited capacity - seating only - no reservations.

Our next Wednesday Listening Session is a soul concept album about adultery:

MILLIE JACKSON - CAUGHT UP (Spring Records US - 1974)

CAUGHT UP is raw, sensual, dramatic soul—a brutally candid portrait of love, betrayal, desire, and revenge. Jackson’s spoken-word storytelling and emotionally charged vocals make it feel less like an album and more like overhearing someone’s private life unfold.
Musically, it's soulful, funky, bluesy, and theatrical—lush arrangements, deep grooves, and gospel-inflected vocals supporting Jackson’s fierce storytelling. The music moves between slow-burning sensuality and hard-driving funk, giving the album a raw, cinematic feel.

One of the defining soul albums of the Seventies! Can we get a witness ?!

Bart Rosseau is drummer for the mighty Fifty Foot Combo, among other bands. His collection is a mix of tour memorabilia, travel souvenirs, flea market finds and hours spent in record stores. This Saturday night he’ll be playing a selection with a slight preference for instrumental music, leaving room for instrumental jazz à la Gabor Szabo, popcorn, soul, and roots reggae. Give the drummer some!
