Celebrating Sorrento’s Australian Medallists

At our Annual Dinner, Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club was proud to formally recognise our outstanding Australian medallists following an incredible campaign at the Australian Championships on the Gold Coast.

This year, Sorrento sent an incredible 103 competitors to Aussies. Of those, 78 made Australian Finals and an outstanding 40 athletes stood on the podium - an extraordinary result and a reflection of the talent, hard work, coaching and club culture that continues to grow across Sorrento.

The awards were presented by City of Joondalup Councillor Count and Councillor Phillip Vinciullo, who joined us on the night to help celebrate the achievements of our athletes.

From national titles to silver and bronze medals, our competitors represented Sorrento on the biggest stage in Australian surf lifesaving and returned home with results that made the entire club proud.

Congratulations to all of our Australian medallists and champions on a remarkable achievement, and thank you to Matthew and Phillip for helping us recognise this special moment at our Annual Dinner.

Congratulations Lani Baxter - President’s Award

Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club is proud to congratulate Lani Baxter, recipient of the 2026 President’s Award at the Annual Dinner.

The award was presented by Sorrento SLSC President Rob Doherty, assisted by Surf Life Saving WA President Heidi Gan, as part of the final awards of the evening.

A member of Sorrento since 2013, Lani has grown through the club’s Nipper and Youth pathways to become an outstanding young leader, volunteer, trainer, competitor and role model.

Now in the Under 19 age group, Lani has already contributed more than 140 career patrol hours, holds her Bronze Medallion, has been an ART holder since 2023, and became a WA Training Officer after completing the Youth Trainer Program.

Her contribution extends across every part of the club. Lani has represented Sorrento at TOAD Camp and Rise Up Camp, completed Gold Level in the SLSWA Youth Recognition Program, taken part in the Rookie Lifeguard Program, and was recognised as the SLSWA State Youth Club Achiever in 2024.

She also competes at State and national level across Surf Sports, Lifesaving and Pool Rescue, and has previously been selected in Western Suns teams representing Western Australia.

The President’s Award recognises exceptional contribution to the club - and Lani represents so much of what is great about Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club.

Congratulations Lani on this very special and thoroughly deserved recognition.

Congratulations Lara Taylor – 2026 Coach of the Year

Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club is proud to congratulate Lara Taylor, named our 2026 Coach of the Year at the Annual Dinner.

The award was presented by Tom French MP, Member for Moore, who joined us to help recognise the outstanding contribution of our volunteer coaches and leaders.

Coaches play a vital role in surf lifesaving. They develop skills, build confidence, create positive environments and often have a lasting impact on whether members continue in the sport.

Lara’s impact this season has been exceptional, particularly through her work with youth and female athletes. She has created an environment where athletes feel supported, challenged and confident to achieve their best.

Her influence has been reflected not only in the development of individual athletes, but also in Sorrento’s outstanding results, with the club successfully defending the Youth Champion Club Flag and increasing its winning margin from the previous season.

Lara has also been a passionate advocate for female participation and development, helping athletes back themselves, support one another and perform at their best.

Congratulations Lara on a thoroughly deserved award, and thank you to Tom French MLA for helping us recognise this important achievement.

Congratulations Lizzy Lane – 2026 Assessor of the Year

Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club is proud to congratulate Lizzy Lane, named our 2026 Assessor of the Year at the Annual Dinner.

The award was presented by Tom French MP, Member for Moore, who joined us to help recognise the outstanding contribution of our volunteers across education, training and member development.

A lifesaver for more than 15 years, and an assessor at Sorrento for the past five seasons, Lizzy has played an important role in maintaining the high standards expected of our surf lifesavers.

This season alone, she conducted almost 100 proficiency assessments and oversaw close to 100 Surf Rescue Certificate examinations for many of Sorrento’s youngest lifesavers.

The Assessor of the Year Award recognises not only technical knowledge and commitment, but also the ability to support members as they develop the skills needed to keep our beaches safe.

Congratulations Lizzy on a thoroughly deserved award.

Congratulations Lani Baxter – 2026 Trainer of the Year

Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club is proud to congratulate Lani Baxter, named our 2026 Trainer of the Year at the Annual Dinner.

The award was presented by Tom French MP, Member for Moore, who joined us to help recognise the outstanding contribution of our volunteers across education, training and member development.

The Sorrento Education Team plays a vital role in developing the next generation of lifesavers. This season alone, more than 100 members completed training courses, while a further 400 requalifications ensured our members remained skilled, current and ready to keep our beaches safe.

Since becoming a Training Officer in 2023, Lani has quickly established herself as one of Sorrento’s most active trainers. In the past 12 months, she has trained almost 100 SRC and Bronze candidates, contributing close to 400 volunteer hours.

Lani is known for developing confident, capable lifesavers and building strong, positive relationships with her students.

This season, she also expanded her contribution from trainer to coach, playing a key role in preparing athletes for Champion Lifesaver and Champion Patrol events. Her dedication helped Sorrento finish 1st in WA and 2nd at Aussies in the Under 14–19 Champion Lifesaver category.

Congratulations Lani on a thoroughly deserved award, and thank you to Tom French MLA for helping us recognise this important achievement.

Congratulations Roger Nowell - 2026 Official of the Year

Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club is proud to congratulate Roger Nowell, named our 2026 Official of the Year at the Annual Dinner.

The award was presented by Tom French MP, Member for Moore, who joined us to recognise the important role volunteers play in supporting surf lifesaving competition.

Surf Sport Officials are the people who make competition possible. Their experience, knowledge and willingness to give their time ensure carnivals are safe, fair and professionally run, while also helping mentor the next generation of officials.

Roger has been a familiar and respected presence on the beach for many years. Whether officiating at club carnivals, State Championships, or answering a last-minute call-up to assist at the Australian Championships, Roger is always willing to step up and put the sport first.

This season, he refereed Championship Finals at the State Championships and once again demonstrated the reliability, experience and professionalism that make him such a valued member of the surf sports community.

Unfortunately Roger was unable to be with us on the night, but we were pleased to recognise his outstanding contribution.

Congratulations Roger on a thoroughly deserved award.

Congratulations Glenn Ridley – 2026 Age Manager of the Year

Sorrento Surf Life Saving Club is proud to congratulate Glenn Ridley, named our 2026 Age Manager of the Year at the Annual Dinner.

The award was presented by Tom French MP, Member for Moore, who joined us to help recognise the incredible contribution of our volunteers across the Woodside Nipper and Youth Programs.

Sorrento is built on the work of volunteers, and nowhere is that more evident than in our Nipper and Youth programs. With more than 900 Nippers across eight age groups, and almost 300 young people involved in Youth, these programs simply would not be possible without the dedication of our Age Managers.

Glenn has guided his age group from Under 8s through to Under 13s with incredible passion and commitment, helping develop not only surf skills, but also confidence, friendships and a lifelong love of surf lifesaving.

His contribution extends well beyond his own age group. Whether supporting the Junior Committee, helping with board training, March Past, or simply stepping in wherever help is needed, Glenn is always willing to lend a hand.

The saying “leave things better than you found them” perfectly describes Glenn. His enthusiasm, care and dedication have made a lasting impact on the Sorrento Nipper Program, and his legacy will continue through the many young members progressing into Youth and beyond.

Congratulations Glenn on a thoroughly deserved award.
