Farmer of the Month: Gabriel Nunes, Brazil

Some coffees tell you where they're from the moment they hit your cup. Gabriel's is one of those.

The Nunes family are winners of national and international awards, including first place at the Cup of Excellence in 2015, one of the most prestigious honours in the specialty coffee world. A recognition that reflects years of daily dedication, innovative thinking, and a willingness to push the boundaries of what's possible on a farm.

It is a process built on trust in the weather, trust in the land, and trust in years of experience knowing exactly when the moment is right. It locks in those deep, fruit-forward flavours before the beans are laid out to dry naturally under the open sky on the patio. No shortcuts. No rushing. Just the sun, the air, and time doing their work.

When Marte visited alongside our partners SouthLand Merchants, she watched that patience play out firsthand. She came home with footage, a deeper respect for the craft, and a coffee we're genuinely proud to share with you.

That care is what coaxes out the blackberry and grapes, with a uniquely Brazilian twist of cashew lingering at the finish.

Sharon D Clifford is a West Australian artist with over 30 years of creative exploration — working with colour, natural materials, and a quiet belief that nature places its treasures on our path every day.

Her artwork Crowd of Parsley, made from actual parsley seed stems, is now on our Art Cup. A reminder to slow down, wrap your hands around something warm, and notice the beauty all around you.

FARMER OF THE MONTH — Costa Rica Aguilera Brothers

Back in the 1940s, a man planted coffee in Costa Rica's West Valley. Today, his twelve children work that same land together—picking, processing, and pouring four generations of pride into every harvest.

Brothers Felipe and Erasmo lead the mill, where only the most carefully sorted cherry ever makes it through. Their Finca Licho lot is honey processed and dried slowly in the West Valley sun, mucilage and all. The kind of coffee that takes patience to make and only a moment to fall in love with.

Each coffee is individually sourced for its high cupping scores before being carefully brought together. We roast each origin separately to honour its unique character, then blend them to create something greater than the sum of their parts.

A bold and expressive cup celebrating the best of Vietnam, Guatemala, and Honduras. Expect maple syrup, baker's cocoa, and warming spice, with a lingering sweetness and beautifully balanced depth.

Vietnam Son La SC16 | Washed
Grown at 600–1,050 metres in Son La's mountainous terrain, selectively picked and meticulously washed for a clean, structured cup with green apple, warm spice, orange, and herbal notes.

Guatemala Finca El Durazno | Washed
Five generations of the Castillo family have farmed these volcanic highlands of Santa Rosa since 1893, producing coffees bright with red apple, lime, and soft stone fruits.

Honduras Mario Mejía | Natural
Second-generation farmer Mario Mejía tends three microclimates across the misty highlands of La Paz, delivering naturally processed lots rich in dark chocolate, jammy apple, and mild caramel.

Sixteen years ago, Karvan Coffee was born from a simple idea and a caravan trip.

With a love for the open road and a passion for exceptional coffee, Brad and I set out to create something that could travel with them. Coffee crafted with care, quality, and purpose, wherever the journey led. What began as a caravan adventure grew into something far greater: a business built on community, craftsmanship, and a relentless pursuit of excellence in every cup.

Last weekend, for the first time, we sat quietly in the café and looked toward the heart of what we’ve built and said, “Look at what we created.” Reflecting on the journey has been filled with laughter, a few tears, and immense pride.

As we prepare to return to the road and continue our own caravan adventure, the time has come to pass the torch. We’re delighted to share that Karavn coffee will now be in the hands of another West Australian couple, Shaun and Emily Tonkinson, who share the same deep commitment to quality coffee and community.

What does this mean for you?

*Stability – The team you know and love will be here to keep spoiling you, and Shaun and Emily are committed to keeping the business running as the well loved family business that it is.

From the slopes of Inzá Cauca, Javier Quintero’s Buena Vista farm grows a rare Ethiopian-lineage Bourbon Aruzi at 1,600–1,700 MASL.

Meticulously processed with a 30-hour underwater fermentation, this coffee delivers a dazzlingly bright and aromatic cup: fragrant bergamot, sun-ripened mandarin, and luscious grape-like sweetness. Silky, clean body and luminous acidity carry each sip with effortless elegance, finishing refined and lingering.

Before it was Blend 3, it was Brad's Blend.

The very first blend we ever created at Leaf Bean Machine. What started as a passion project back in 2011 has grown into one of our most loved roasts, and for good reason.

It opens with an elegant tropical fruit aroma before hitting you with bold, earthy flavours straight out of a Sumatran jungle. Expect a clean, bright acidity, a beautifully round body, and a finish that settles into gentle malty sweetness with a hint of toffee.

What if your morning coffee was a portal to another world?

Cathy Inman, a sustainable fibre artist from the Perth Hills, grew up with her hands in the earth. From gardening with her mum to studying horticulture to working as a gardener, nature has always been her constant. And eventually, it handed her an art form.

Her Art Cup piece, Portal — woven from plant fibre and silk, 1.6 metres of pure imagination — is exactly what it sounds like. A gateway to other worlds, other possibilities, other ways of seeing. She chose this artwork for our Art Cup Project because she wanted you to feel that magic in your hands with every sip.

Farmer of the Month: Nigist Girmachew

This month, we're honouring Nigist Girmachew from Wegida, Yirgacheffe – a remarkable producer whose story is one of resilience, hard work, and exceptional coffee.

After inheriting her farm from her late husband, Nigist has been managing three hectares of coffee at 2,200 metres above sea level whilst raising her seven children. Growing local heirloom varieties beneath false banana shade trees, she uses entirely natural farming practices — no chemical fertilisers or pesticides. Nigist processes all her coffee using the natural method, and through a partnership with a women-led exporter, she receives fair pricing that strengthens her financial stability and rewards her quality.
