Ok we indoor LED powered vertical farms can try to compete but for flowers there's nothing quite like a shadehouse for sheer area and volume of flowers. A kilo weekly came of this crop but dang it was a half day harvest and some, but a nice experience early in the AM as the sun rises, surrounded by forrest in this location. Bloody great add on to your microgreens business. If you can - you should ! When we could - we did ! 👌

Here's another example of some radom interloper, in this case a Red Steaks Mizuna seed found its way into a pot of red vein sorrel. Given the time it takes to grow RVS, the Mizuna had time to get into the baby leaf stage. How's the colours ! Do you have any pictures of these things happening to you ? 😄

This is my typical approach when looking to land customers. An example of what you're capable of versus a sample of everything you offer, it leads into a discussion about what else you can do for them. I've literally landed hundreds of customers like this over the years, just beware not to try your luck during service times. This restaurant ultimately converted into a customer and Ive since become friends with the owner who is an extremely nice fellow. He is taking on another kitchen for a large venue next week (1 of 9 in a group) and with that some additional business locked in !
For anyone local to Melbourne on the West side I can tell you from behind the scenes this restaurant has impeccable standards, he willingly pays a lot more for quality produce, like 800 gram per dozen organic eggs, it's not all about the money for him. The food is dead set sensational and the juice he whipped up for me the other was absolutely the nicest I have ever had in my entirely lifetime...watermelon, lychee, fresh rasperies, mango juice and more, it was a one off custom just for me and was to DIE for I'm not kidding. Headed there for a meal today in fact with Jem Delfin and our little girl. ðŸĪ—

So a random seed of Green Mizuna found its way into a pot of Red Garnet aka Magenta Amaranth. Couldn't help but to take a picture of it but it makes me wonder about multiple varieties being seeded up in pots so customers get a nice little mix of varieties. I'm sure its a thing, are there any growers out there growing multiple varieties in a single pot or tray ? ðŸĪ”

A flashback to a record setting tray of Broccoli when I was pushing the limits, just to see whats possible under our lighting system, grown to touching the light we are talking excess 300ppfd. Cut near the media for max weight(long stems)this tray exceeded 500 grams - yeap its possible - and this is literally 7 days from seed I absolutely assure you. 30 grams of seed used, on coco. A few folks did call into question if such a yield was possible, so next crop I took a video of the harvest and weighing(which I still have - hit me, and I'll see if I can dig it up). In a larger scale grow its difficult to consistently replicate I do confess. How about you, whats you usual tray yield and how many days from seed ? ðŸ˜ģ

Some nice trays of rocket shortly before being harvested. This crop is just showing some true leaves, if you zoom in. It is easy to grow, getting the seed weights spot on helps as does good ventilation and temps. If it does wilt due a missed water it typically doesn't recover without leaf damage, so beware. Its spicy, almost hot, as a microgreen, and I think it absolutely rocks on a bacon and egg brekky burger. How about you, what do you think it pairs fabulously with ? 😋

A nice little crop of live potted corriander shortly before being packed and off to our wholesale client. We've discovered this crop very definitely benefits cooler temps especially during germination - and plenty of moisture so the hulls shed more easily(these are not splits). You either love it or hate, it seems theres no middle ground. Interestingly I did read that some people have a gene that makes it taste like soap - is that you ? I see the bumper sticker - "I hate corriander" - its really a thing ! How about, you do love ot or not ? ðŸĪŠ

It's harvest day and we love our green Mizuna crops for cut microgreen mixes, sonmuch. Grown under high ppfd and 18hrs a day, these take just 10 days from seed, they yield well and have a super sexy serated leaf so your mix is just bunch of cotyledons and stems. Speaking of seed its incredibly cheap when you buy the 15kg bag lots, its almost like its free ! ðŸĪ—

Who doesn't like a good ol' crop of basil ? Such a reliable crop when conditions are favourable. Here's a nice big tray of live potted Geneovese basil. They are notoriously adverse to cold temperatures, being a very typical summer crop. They also love a big drink of water so long as they are well lit up with adequate airflow through the crop, letting the media overdry nearly always causes irreparable leaf stress and damage. Before they are sold it's a good practice to transition them to a cooler area of your grow area to harden them up for the enivitable cold leaning transition into the hands of customers and cool storage. Do you have any special tips for your fellow growers when it comes to growing beautiful basil crops ? 😍

And so the search continues for a coco and soil free alternative to avoid all that mess and bulk of tradional media subtrates for growing microgreens. To be honest I remain undecided about just what the best option is going forward for our operation moving forward but the search continues. For everyone it will be different. For the crew at On The Grow - Microgreens & Indoor Growing it certainly seems there preference is re useable silicone matts but as they will tell you it's not a solution for every crop. Whats your favourite system of things and why ? Coco, soil, h**p, silicone or what else ?

A carpet of perfectly germinated microgreen trays. You just know you nailed it when they present like this soon after germination. This is one of the mostly commonly grown microgreen crops that are especially popular with the health concious foodies. It has that nearly unmistakeable look about it. The always popular edible flowers. Here's a nice crop of violas and marigolds in the early stages. Anyone who has grown these crops knows that they dont look this structured for long, violas actually grow quite large, and Marigolds quite tall, so its quite ala challenge to make them work in vertical farming systems. Then factor in how much various insects love these crops it presents another dimension of challenges versus short cycle microgreens crops. Whats your favourite edible flower crops and why ?

A little story about our grow room and some ideas that might give you some inspiration. Stepping back in time before we started using airwalls - when we had actual aiselways between our systems. When space is at a premium the question becomes where do you install fans to circulate the air ? This room was at this stage being serviced by a a single pedestal fan and they do a surprisingly good job but inevitably it was a compromise due to microclimates being present, ie some areas just wouldnt get enough airflow and others copped a bit too much. Having fans on every shelf was also impractical especially with very low shelf heights. Hence the idea of airwalls was spawned and so it came to pass, a common plennum chamber pressurised by intake fans which then distributed air evenly to every shelf level. It had the affect to negate the need for aiselways by taking advantage of slide out end only access to the grow trays which slide out and rest on the opposing shelf. What innovative and unique ideas have you designed into your grow room ?

Some nice trays of Amaranth coming along. When it all comes together Amaranth is a stunner of a crop. It is temperamental though ! Too much water and it becomes very susceptible to dampening off. What are your secrets to success when growing microgreens ?
