Remo trained as a toolmaker at the Italian Metallurgical Society (SMI) factory when World War II erupted. During this time, Italians, experienced significant divisions between those who supported the Italian resistance movement, those who collaborated with the German forces, and those who remained neutral. Around the town of Barga during 1943-1945, this division was further exacerbated by its position near the Gothic Line, German defensive line that ran across northern Tuscany. Remo held strong anti-fascist views and as a result kept a low profile and well clear from German authorities, who would constantly check papers of young Italians, looking for men avoiding conscription or possible partisans. Seeking better economic opportunities and escaping post-war devastation, Remo disembarked from the S.S. Cyrenia at Station Pier on the 22 January 1951 to start a new life…
During a recent trip to Barga, we attended a prensentation of what life was like back then.

In 1942, Remo was a teenager living in northern Tuscany (around the rugged Garfagnana mountains and the Apuan Alps, just north of Lucca). For the 17 year olds in the picture below who had just completed their vocational trade training, they had just taken time off to celebrate before seeing half the cohort off to the eastern front in Russia never to return again. Life for these young men was like living on a knife-edge. Only to get worse before the catastrophic storm of 1943–1945.

‘Remo’s Schmear On Simpson’ operates as a living tribute to Remo, a Tuscan-born engineer who migrated from Barga (Lucca), Italy, to Melbourne in 1951. Pre-arrival, Remo was issued with a copy of “English For Newcomers To Australia”.

The BBC T V series called “Amanda & Alan Italian Job” Series 2 follows Amanda Holden and Alan Carr as they renovate an old 17th century Tuscan townhouse near Barga (Lucca). The same area Remo’s plays homage to. You can watch the complete series on ABC iview. Although Amanda and Alan purchased the property for only one euro, they had to agree to spend money and renovate the property within a certain time limit. The series illustrates just how beautiful the area around Barga is. In April 2024, Amanda and Alan sold their renovated Tuscan townhouse for £187,777! In episode 4, Amanda and Alan explore the nearby town of Barga.

Close to the finishing line - Still quiet a few small jobs to do along with permit and licensing applications to complete. Difficult while still teaching, nevertheless old school teacher training has helped - I thought I would never need to write on blackboards again 👨‍🏫
