A bloke walked up to Emily Box at a sponsorship event last week and asked if she was one of the players on the girls' team.
She's 28. She owns the pub.
"No. I own the pub." 🍺
Honestly? That moment says everything.
Because 60 years ago, women weren't even allowed to stand at an Australian pub bar — let alone own one. In Queensland it wasn't until 1970. In South Australia, women were banned from serving behind a public bar for nearly 60 years. Two women literally chained themselves to a bar rail in Brisbane in 1965 just to fight for the right to be there.
Now Emily Box from Pelaw Main owns the whole bloody place.
One year in at the Young Street Hotel, Carrington. Food made from scratch. A community that loves her. And a story that deserves to be shared.
