On Long-Term Survivors Day we acknowledge the strength, resilience, and contributions of all long-term survivors of HIV.
Karumah Inc. would like to recognise and thank Robert Pearson, a long-standing member of our community whose journey reflects both the challenges and progress of the HIV response in Australia.
Following his HIV diagnosis in 1988, Robert lived through a time when an HIV diagnosis was considered a death sentence. He experienced the loss of friends and his partner, witnessed the devastating impact of the epidemic, and faced significant health challenges of his own.
Rather than turning away, Robert chose to give back.
During some of the most difficult years of the epidemic, Robert supported others who were living and dying, with HIV/AIDS. Over the years, he continued to volunteer with a number of local organisations, including as a peer support worker with Karumah.
Robert has also been a passionate advocate within the HIV sector, contributing to community education, health promotion, harm reduction, and the ongoing fight against stigma and discrimination.
He has been a valued member of Karumah Inc. for many years and remains a member today.
Today, we honour Robert and all long-term survivors who have helped shape the HIV response and create a better future for those who followed.
Thank you, Robert.
