The Royal Adelaide Show has introduced new Merino classes designed to reflect the modern sheep industry, recognising animals that excel in both wool quality and meat production. The initiative highlights the ongoing evolution of Merino breeding and the importance of balanced, commercially relevant genetics for today's producers.

It's an exciting step forward for the industry and a great opportunity to showcase the versatility and performance of the modern Merino.

Merino sheep produce methane through burping, sharting and everyday routine flatulence due to the digestion of most things that enter their bodies - not unlike a weekend at Barry's! 🐑💨

The culmination of this contributes to the carbon footprint of our wool and sheep meat industries. In response, the Australian wool and agricultural sectors have made major strides to develop "low methane" Merino lines, dramatically curbing emissions at the source.

Research and development programs in Australia—such as the Merino Lifetime Productivity (MLP) project and collaborations involving the University of New England (UNE), CSIRO and Turretfield Research focus on significantly lowering the environmental impact of Merinos.

Young merinos set to make their mark 🐑

The Turretfield Research Centre Team has been busy in the field, marking over 526 lambs ahead of the SA Merino Sire Evaluation Field Day on Friday 12 June.

At the field day, breeders, farmers, and industry representatives will have the chance to get up close and examine:
🐑 Fleece traits including weight, diameter, colour and character
🪰 Skin wrinkle, and face, breech and crutch cover (important for preventing fly strike)
📏 Jaw, face, pastern, and toe morphology

With SA’s sheep industries (including meat, wool and skins) generating annual revenue of around $1.36 billion (and over 58 million kilos of wool!), understanding and optimising Merino reproductive genetics is big business.
