🇦🇺 Remembering Our Fallen – Jerusalem War Cemetery

Bayside's Deputy Mayor, Cr Andrew Hockley, recently shared these photos with us following a visit to the Jerusalem War Cemetery, where he joined a delegation of Australian and Israeli former servicemen and women, and civilians, to lay a wreath in remembrance of Australians who served in the Middle East.

The cemetery is maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and is the largest in the region. It contains 2,539 First World War burials, including 144 Australians and 34 New Zealanders.

There's also a special connection to Highett RSL. One of our veterans had a great-uncle who took part in the famous Australian Light Horse charge at B**rsheba on 31 October 1917, during the Sinai and Palestine Campaign.

We often hear about Gallipoli and the Western Front, but thousands of Australians also served in the Middle East, fighting in some very significant battles, including B**rsheba and Jerusalem.

It's wonderful to see these places still being cared for and those who served being remembered more than a century later.
