A Brief Introduction to Medical Doctor and Professor, Liesl ZĂĽhlke
Liesl Zühlke is rated as one of the world’s best heart specialists. She is so good at her job, that when she was asked to fill out a detailed resume of all her positions and accomplishments, it ran into more than 60 pages. Her story, however, does not start here so let’s start at the beginning.
Growing up on the Cape Flats, Liesl did not come from a family of academics and doctors. Both her mother and father had to leave school to support their families and her grandparents did not even attend school. In fact, her grandmother was 6 when she had to start working as a domestic worker. Also, it was probably her granny’s genes that made her who she is.
You see, despite not having attended school, her grandmother was one of the most literate people that Liesl knew. Not only did she teach herself how to read and write, but she also taught Liesle how to read and write. In fact, by the time Liesl attended primary school, she already knew all her ABC’s and 123’s. Now, let’s look at Liesl.
Since her resume runs into more than 60 pages, it is not possible to list everything, so here are some of her achievements.
She has 8 medical qualifications, including her Medical Degree, a Masters of Health, a PhD; all from the University of Cape Town, and a Health Economics Masters degree from the London School of Economics.
Currently, she works as a Full Professor in Paediatric Cardiology in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Cape Town, is a Paediatric Cardiologist at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, and is the Director of the university’s Children’s Heart Disease Research Unit.
Liesl has published or contributed to more than 250 academic papers and she is internationally recognized as one of the world’s top three academics in rheumatic heart disease.
She holds five other positions including being the Vice President of the South African Medical Research Council and a board member of the World Heart Federation; and some of her many other past positions and achievements include being President of the Paediatric Cardiac Society of South Africa, the President of the South African Heart Association, as well as presenting at the United Nations in New York and the World Health Organization in Geneva.
One last thing about her grandma. From a young age, she had taught Liesl how to plan ahead. For every goal there had to be a strategy and Liesle certainly had it all planned out. When hearing about the first heart transplant at the age of 9, that is when she knew that she would be a cardiologist. That is what she planned to become and that is what she became, just like her granny taught her.
