PechaKucha Johannesburg

PechaKucha Johannesburg PechaKucha Nights is a high-octane "think and drink" evening. A night of creativity and collaboration. Pecha Kucha is Japanese for chit chat.

This world-wide phenomenon was started in 2003 in Tokyo and Pecha Kucha Nights are now hosted in more than 800 cities around the world.

7 presenters each get 20 slides @ 20 seconds each to deliver their presentations in an informal environment to celebrate creativity and passion. We like the moniker of "Think and Drink"!

Last night’s PechaKucha speakers reminded me why this format is so special. In just a few minutes each, they managed to do something most people struggle to do in an hour; hold a room, move a room, and occasionally make a room laugh out loud. The talks were honest, quirky, thoughtful and sometimes beautifully unexpected. People sharing ideas and stories that mattered to them. And when that happens, something interesting occurs in the room: strangers lean in, curiosity wakes up, and for a moment you remember how powerful a simple story can be. That was the magic on the stage last night.

ᴍᴇʟᴛɪɴɢ ᴄʟᴏᴄᴋꜱ ᴀɴᴅ ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜꜱ ɪᴅᴇᴀꜱ. ᴅᴀʟɪ ᴀɴᴅ ᴍᴇ

I love quirky, interesting and eccentric people. I micro-dose on their madness to help me make sense of the world (or my world at least).

One of them is the Spanish artist Salvador Dali. In my talk, "Melting Clocks and Dangerous Ideas: Dali and Me", I'll be unpacking some of his quirks, and how they relate to my life, and perhaps to yours.

Have you ever heard the expression, "the penny dropped"? The moment sudden understanding arrives. The instant something finally makes sense.

Dalí intentionally engineered it. He used the “slumber with a key” technique to spark creativity. He’d nap holding a metal key over a plate. As he drifted off, the key would fall, clang onto the plate, wake him ... and he’d capture the dream imagery instantly.
I'm going to talk about quirks like this 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻 and more on 5 March.

And, I'll be joined on stage by another 9 beautifully quirky and eccentric individuals who will share their brilliant stories. Check them out, link in comment section.

Grit, Grace, and Six Packs isn’t just a talk — it’s a wake-up call. Candida Di Giandomenico will take you on a high-energy ride through the sweat, setbacks, and soul-searching it takes to build strength inside and out.

This is about more than fitness — it’s about the relentless pursuit of a life that demands courage, discipline, and heart. If you’re ready to stop playing small and start showing up with power and purpose, this PechaKucha is your moment.

I can't believe that time has flown so quickly. The next PechaKucha event is a month away.

You may be aware that Wayne Duvenage from OUTA (Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse) is speaking at PechaKucha on June 12.

And if you live in Jozi, it's no secret that this is possibly one of the worst-run cities in South Africa ... if the robots, makeshift beggar traffic officers, and potholes are anything to go by (and that's just the tip of the iceberg).

If you have the time and inclination, have a look at Wayne's recent interview with Mike Sham (The Tryst proprietor, Mark Sham's uncle) about the (chaotic) state of Johannesburg.
