Currently showing in the Cool Room Complex is Adele van Heerden’s solo exhibition, Hydraulics.

The exhibition was developed during the Adele’s residency at NIROX. During her residency, Adele has been making work about hydraulic systems at Nirox, investigating how water moves above and below earth. The Cradle of Humankind’s dolomitic rock was formed from sediments in the sea covering the world approximately 2.3 to 2.6 billion years ago. The acidic groundwater has dissolved this dolomite over millions of years, forming caverns and creating extensive karst aquifer systems. These systems enable the movement of water below the surface, occasionally emerging as springs in the area.

The project investigates these hydraulic processes, focusing on the circulation of water above and below ground. Research methods have included site visits to local cave systems, walking, field recording, and photographic documentation. The work responds to formations such as the Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Cave, which function as geological archives within the Cradle of Humankind, as well as the ponds and rivers on-site at Nirox.

The exhibition comprises paintings made with oil and gouache on linen, alongside a multi-channel sound installation derived from field recordings of water in different locations across the site, as well as photographic and video work. The title references hydraulics as a framework for understanding the physical behaviour, distribution, and connectivity of water within this landscape.

Exhibition will run until the 10th of June.
