Today is a deeply emotional and historic moment for us all.

Today is a deeply emotional and historic moment in the life of Niki's Oasis Jazz Restaurant.

For over 31 years, these walls have carried the sound of jazz, the rhythm of conversation, the warmth of African hospitality, and the spirit of community. Today, we proudly announce that Niki’s Oasis Jazz Restaurant has officially been recognised as a Heritage Site.

This recognition is not simply about a building. It is about memory, culture, resilience, and the people who gave this space its soul. From the very beginning in 1995, Niki’s Oasis became more than a restaurant. It became a cultural home — a sanctuary where musicians, poets, artists, activists, students, tourists, families, and the Newtown community could gather to celebrate life through music, food, and heritage.

Over the decades, this space has witnessed unforgettable performances, historic conversations, celebrations, memorials, and moments of healing. Jazz legends and emerging voices alike have shared this stage. Indigenous food prepared with love and recipes passed through generations has brought comfort to many. Friendships were formed here. Dreams were born here. History was preserved here.

This heritage status belongs to everyone who walked through these doors and contributed to the legacy of Niki’s Oasis.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the Heritage Council for recognising the importance of preserving spaces that continue to nurture South African culture and heritage.
