🏔️ Winter Magic at Van Reenen’s Pass ❄️

There is a completely different kind of magic that settles over Van Reenen during the winter months.
The air is crisp, the skies are an impossibly clear blue, and the sweeping views over the Drakensberg escarpment stretch out as far as the eye can see.

After a brisk walk soaking in those endless mountain views, the best part is heading indoors to thaw out. Think roaring log fires, a steaming mug of hot chocolate (or a glass of red), and that unbeatable, cozy countryside hospitality at the Green Lantern Inn.

Dating back to the early 1900s, this antique “National” cash register comes from a time when every sale was rung up by hand, every coin was counted carefully, and every customer was known by name. 💰

Long before card machines, barcode scanners, or touch screens, this little till would have sat proudly on a shop counter, likely in a sweet shop, general dealer, or small-town café, ringing up chocolates, ci******es, cold drinks, and pocket-money treats one coin at a time.

Complete with mechanical keys, brass workings, and its original marble counter, it still carries the charm of another era. Rumour has it the marble slab was even used to test whether coins were genuine or counterfeit by listening for the distinctive ring of real silver.

Imagine the stories hidden inside this machine…
Children standing on tiptoes with a few coins in hand. Travellers stopping in for supplies. Shopkeepers balancing the day’s takings late at night under warm lights and the smell of to***co, sweets, and polished wood.

More than a till, it’s a surviving piece of everyday history. ✨

Weekend Adventure Incoming at Green Lantern Inn 🏍️🌄

We’re excited to welcome The Adventure Company to Green Lantern Inn this June for the Van Reenens Ride 2026, a weekend built for dirt bikes, quads, and side-by-sides.

Expect scenic farm trails, mountain views, good food, fireside laughs, and a great crowd of outdoor-loving people. Whether you’re riding hard or just coming along for the atmosphere, it promises to be one of those proper country weekends you’ll remember.
