BANELE.

What a guy. And now he has his own label! We’ve been Salt River warehouse neighbours with Banele since 2019 when he joined Duncan Savage as Assistant Winemaker at his inner city cellar, so it’s been a real treat to watch his solo project come together piece by piece.

The maiden release under his Tembela label comprises a cracking Verdelho and an ultra classy Syrah - a nod to his Savage tutelage, but completely his own. Made in tiny quantities (literally, just a barrel or two), you won’t want to miss out - we managed to grab a couple of cases which are now available on our online store. Definitely one to watch.

GREAT HEART.

Chris and Andrea Mullineux have been up to something... new. Of course, you already know it’ll be the good stuff. But what really sets Great Heart apart is that it’s owned by the winery employees, and a portion of all sales from the label goes directly into their pocket. We love to see it! The wines are made the same way they’re always made at Mullineux: natural fermentation. Minimal intervention. True to their roots.

TURNING WINE UPSIDE DOWN.

Today marks the most significant shift for Publik since we opened our doors as a little wine bar almost eight years ago. As of today, we are flipping things on their head, shifting our online focus entirely to a new offering:

We are launching SA’s first personalized, fully flexible wine subscription.

A monthly subscription of 3 or 6 bottles of wine at R395/R790 respectively.
It starts with a short quiz to understand your palate.
It’s entirely customisable: you can add to or edit your selection each month before it gets delivered.
Flexible: you can update preferences, skip a month, pause anytime.
Data-driven: rate the wines and get rewarded, plus we automatically adjust your monthly selection based on your preferences.

It’s three months late and taken a huge effort, and we’re only in the beta phase. We’ll invite new subscribers each week (previous Wine Renegades members are first on the list), so please sign up if you’re interested.

It’s the start of a new chapter, a monthly wine club that’s not a club, but perhaps the easiest way to discover new wines that are curated to your own palate, wines you’re almost certain to enjoy.

CRESCENDO. “One of the most anticipated releases in recent years, this is the resurrection of the Crescendo wine originally released under the Cordoba label and well renowned as one of the best red blends the Cape ever produced.

It also has a heavy nostalgia for me. In my first wine-related job, working at Constantia Uitsig restaurant in the early 2000's, this was the heavy-hitter, the wine that savvy guests would ask for. Only made from 1995 - 2004, Cordoba sadly folded shortly after, but I did all I could to collect any remaining vintages and it became the hard-to-find wine we'd open to commemorate a family occasion.

Thankfully, the current owners of the property clearly appreciate the Crescendo legacy and eye a return to the top end of the South African wine charts. One sip of the Taaibosch Crescendo 2018 is all you need to believe this.” -

We've got a theory: the nicer the winemaker, the better the wine. Nobody proves this more true than the Cravens: the un-serious couple making seriously, seriously good wine from their brand new HQ in Stellenbosch (don’t be fooled by the picture, this is their best “wine connoisseur” impression).

Despite near-apocalyptic harvest/pandemic conditions, all six new wines are absolutely. flipping. fantastic. Bravo, Mick and Jeanine... We only wish you'd made more.
