We kick off with Bryan Tennant, a Cape Town-based solo performer weaving heartfelt original stories alongside acoustic rock and Celtic folk influences; followed by Martin Prochaska, who brings a relaxed pub-honed set of original tracks and classic British indie rock covers; before closing out with long-time club favorites Black River, delivering a rich, full-band performance packed with original songwriting, driving guitars, saxophone, and keyboards.

This coming Monday: a change of format with three 2-song opening sets followed by two feature performances!

Short Sets: Beric Symes brings intricate, “new age acoustic folk” guitar instrumentals to open the night. Barleycorn favorite Clint Brown takes the stage for a quick, lively set. Former Barleycorn Songwriters’ Competition winner Fruit Vendor caps off the segment, blending indie rock, funk, and hip-hop with sharp South African humor.

Nick L’Ange: Blending outlaw country, 60s folk, and punk rock edge with literary reflection, Nick delivers an original, raw perspective - aiming to be “a kind of Vonnegut with a guitar.”

Keenan Scott: rounds out the night with deeply reflective acoustic songwriting rooted in sincerity, emotional weight, and rich connection ahead of two new album releases later this year.

Drawing on over a decade of stage collaboration, this engaging duo brings a fun, warm-hearted mix of familiar covers, originals, and easy banter.

Terry Lloyd-Roberts & Friends
Backed by keyboard, cello, cajon, and harmonies, Terry leads a rich, reflective performance exploring love, loss, and the human condition through evocative originals and covers.

‼️ Calling all singers & songwriters! 📣 The 2026 Barleycorn Songwriters’ Competition is now open for song entries!

Entries close Monday, 28th September 2026.

Song entries must be entirely original, non-derivative, never performed in public, nor previously published or shared, online or in any other public domain.

The Top 10 songs will be invited to play live, for the very first time, on our Barleycorn stage, in front of our audience and a prestigious panel of judges.

R20000+ in awesome prizes to be won, including thousands of Rands of Bothners (BOTHNERS) vouchers, and a studio recording of the winning song!

The Barleycorn Songwriters’ Competition is an annual songwriting contest, hosted by Barleycorn Music Club, based in Cape Town, running for more than 30 consecutive years - almost as old as the music club itself!

‼️ We are back on Monday, August 17th, and we’ve got something special lined up to celebrate!

We’ve missed the music, the room, and the community, so we’re kicking off this next chapter with a special two-act night: an intimate, reflective opening set followed by an expansive, multi-genre double-slot album launch.

The Opener

Adam Grey:
After two decades in the corporate jungle, Carl is back behind the guitar with a handful of raw, honest songs. He has no plans to record his music - he’d rather share it right here in the room, reflecting on organic connection, community, and what spaces like Barleycorn mean in a hyper-digitised world.

The Main Act

Aldano - Home or Away Part 1:
Taking over the main stage to celebrate the release of their new album Home or Away Part 1, Aldano is a genre-fluid Cape Town collective founded by scholar and musician Riaan “Riggs” Oppelt. Fronted by the soulful, captivating Jammy-Lee Lemini, the group blends alt-rock, Afrobeat, synth-pop, and folk sung across seven languages. It’s vibrant, deeply collaborative, and the perfect soundtrack to bring our stage back to life.

‼️ Due to unusual circumstances - including the renovations underway at the Rondebosch Golf Club - Barleycorn Music Club is taking a winter break. We will be back on the 17th August 2026!

While the doors are temporarily closed, we have some exciting things cooking:

🏆 The 2026 Annual Songwriters’ Competition - We will shortly be announcing the official opening for song entries! The competition is open to all original songs, with awesome prizes up for grabs as always. Later this year, the Top 10 finalists will perform their songs live for the very first time on the Barleycorn stage in front of a packed audience and a panel of judges.

📋 Help Us Shape the Future - The committee is using this downtime to look at how we can continue to fulfill and develop Barleycorn's mission. We’d love your input - please help us by completing a short questionnaire about your experiences and expectations at the club.

‼️New format, new energy, showcasing some of the Cape Town’s best female singer-songwriters!

This Monday, June 29th, we’re changing things up again. Come be a part of an authentic, creative night out in your city as we bring together six incredible artists for a showcase of acoustic sounds, raw vocals, and incredible songwriting talent. Grab your friends and join the music.

We open the floor next Monday with three distinct, brilliant voices sharing their craft in an intimate, collective setting:

Annique Bester: Melodic, acoustic storytelling built on unique, self-taught guitar chords and deeply personal expressions.
Morgan Visser: Authentic, commanding indie-folk with powerhouse vocals and an undeniable live presence.
Sophia Frank: Razor-sharp lyricism meeting high-energy indie-pop-rock, fresh off her new track “Older Than You”.

‼️ Start next week on a high note! We’ve got a packed house this coming Monday night, June 22nd, with a lineup that moves from bushveld folk to rebel reggae to energetic rock and roll.

Here’s who’s hitting the stage:

Clint Brown: Back from the KZN bushveld, Clint brings his sharp wit and original “baby-boomer folk rock” to the club.

Carlo Fortune: A powerful voice in roots reggae and folk, Carlo blends spiritual resistance with classic rebel sounds to keep the movement alive.

Gordon Rocker: Channeling the spirit of Elvis, Gordon delivers a soulful, electrifying set of classic rock and roll melodies.

On the Edge: This versatile three-piece closes the night with a lively fusion of Indie, Rock, and “Rickabilly” that’s guaranteed to get the room moving.

‼️ Monday night is looking good! Pop down to Barleycorn at the Rondebosch Golf Club on June 15th for an easygoing evening of bushveld folk, sultry songwriting, and classic homegrown rock.

Clint Brown: Emerging from hibernation in the KZN bushveld, Clint returns to our stage with his unique, witty brand of original baby-boomer folk-rock.

Brig Stanford: Bringing raw vocal power and sultry undertones, Brig shares honest, relatable stories of love, heartache, and everything in between.
