100% Design Africa is far more than just an exhibition. As Africa’s only international design show, 100% Design Africa is the launchpad that the industry needs to enter onto the global stage. Through the spirit of exchange, this hybrid trade event brings key members of the interior industry together, showcasing all manner of contemporary designs from across the continent – from furniture and product design to specialised areas like art, literature, and crafts. As a phygital platform, 100% Design Africa combines the power of physical exhibition space and events, with the power of digital storytelling, enabling innovative ideas to be showcased in new and exciting ways. Interior and furniture designer Simphiwe Mlambo is taking a practice shaped by culture, storytelling and the evolving function of objects to Paris.

A former Design Indaba Emerging Creative, Simphiwe was also named the winner of the 2024 Nando’s Hot Young Designer Screen Dream competition for Ihawu, a room divider inspired by traditional cowhide shields and incorporating a planter.

This September, he joins six other South African designers and studios at the Maison&Objet Rising Talent Awards, presented through a new collaboration between Maison&Objet and Decorex Africa.

Karlien van Rooyen’s path into design has moved from medical sciences to grassroots activism and a craft practice grounded in experimentation and social transformation.

Selected by Ateliers d’Art de France, Karlien is one of seven South African talents heading to Paris for the Maison&Objet Rising Talent Awards this September.

Presented through a new collaboration between Maison&Objet and Decorex Africa, the awards place a new generation of South African designers at the centre of Maison&Objet’s Design District.

Next week, the Decorex Africa team heads to SHOPPE OBJECT, Maison&Objet and Paris Design Week alongside South Africa’s seven Maison & Objet Rising Talents, a cohort of local design brands and some of the country’s leading design specialists.

Founded by Martin Tallie and Zani Alberts, the studio brings a playful freedom to furniture and objects, using bold form and colour to shift the atmosphere around them.

Pinda Interior Design is taking a “Modern Nguni Experience” to Maison&Objet.

Led by Siyanda Mbele, the presentation brings together tufted rugs, tables, seating and the sculptural Ukhamba Server in an exploration of texture, material and form. Hand-carved surfaces meet high-lacquer finishes, while pieces from Pinda’s first collection sit alongside more recent work to reveal how the studio’s design language has evolved.

At its centre, the Ukhamba Server reinterprets the incised geometric markings found on traditional Southern African clay vessels. Rather than being applied as decoration, the geometry shapes both the form of the piece and the lines carved across its surface.

This September, Pinda Design joins six other South African designers and studios at the Maison&Objet Rising Talent Awards, presented through a new collaboration between Maison&Objet and Decorex Africa.

Light has the power to change everything.

It can soften a room, sharpen its architecture, reveal the character of a material or completely shift the way a space feels. At 100% Design Africa, lighting emerged not simply as a finishing touch, but as a powerful design language in its own right.

Across Future Talks brought to you by Oggie Oak Flooring, pioneering lighting designers explored the creative, technical and emotional possibilities of illumination. On the floor, FloodLight and Ten x Ten placed local lighting firmly in the spotlight, alongside work by Stephen Pikus, Handmades Story, Rialheim, Wire Maven and GreenCraft Lighting.

At 100% Fresh, emerging designers experimented with glass, material and light, while the Design Week Lagos and AIDA Awards presentations extended the conversation across the continent.

Together, these projects showed the remarkable range of lighting being imagined and made here, from sculptural statement pieces to quieter objects that transform the atmosphere of a room.

Some of the most exciting moments at 100% Design Africa happened where one practice met another.

LDA Lighting and MaXhosa Africa explored what can emerge when light encounters a distinctive language of colour and pattern.

At The Good Table, Studio Botanicus, Food, I Love You, Lounge by Marble & Mauve and Wolkberg Casting Studios created an experiential restaurant around slow gathering.

Nearby, The Social Library brought Wolkberg Casting Studio and Nnaw Dining together in a cultural destination shaped by food, cocktails, music and analogue living.

Russell Kaplan Auctioneers worked with Decorex Africa to create The Collector’s Room, placing significant design and collectable objects into a new exhibition context.

At 100% Fresh, Tshwane University of Technology TUT and Greenside Design Center College of Design Centre shared a platform for emerging practice, experimentation and exchange.

Across the floor, collaboration wasn’t simply about combining names. It brought different materials, disciplines and ways of thinking together to create something none could have made alone.

At 100% Design Africa, design wasn’t simply something to look at. It was something to eat, drink and spend time inside.

The Good Table brought together Studio Botanicus Food, I Love You, Lounge by Marble & Mauve and Wolkberg Casting Studios in an experiential restaurant shaped around the art of slow gathering. Raw and weathered timber, antique linens, old silver and basketry met stainless steel, contemporary florals, soft furnishings and ambient light. It was an interior where atmosphere, flavour and materiality were considered with equal care.

Nearby, The Social Library by Wolkberg Casting Studio and Nnaw Dining reimagined the show bar as a cultural destination inspired by analogue living and the luxury of slowing down. A monolithic stainless-steel bar, cast surfaces, timber, suspended lighting, vinyl and collected objects created the setting for cocktails, food, music and conversation.

Led by chef Tshepo Moemise, Nnaw Dining brought a culinary language rooted in classical French technique and layered with Japanese fermentation, Taiwanese flavour balance and the food cultures of Southeast Asia.

Together, the two spaces became the social heart of the 100% Design Africa floor: distinct worlds in which hospitality became another way to experience design.

Across more than 20 sessions, this year’s Future Talks brought to you by Oggie Oak Flooring connected the continent’s leading industry voices across disciplines, while bringing truly diverse audiences into lively conversations with each other as the topics unfolded.

What stood out was the sheer magnitude of what African design is achieving. From opening conversations exploring a new mode of interiors, one that is softer, slower and more intentional, to keynotes by the likes of award-winning architect Peter Rich on the ways global architecture is embracing ancient African thinking, the programme offered new perspectives at every turn.

We left inspired, informed and ready for another year of African design.
