🌾 Vietnam Advances Multi-location Trials under the AFACI RSR Project

The Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute (CLRRI) is making steady progress in implementing the project “Accelerate Variety Registration and Seed Distribution of Stress Tolerant Rice Varieties by AFACI Member Countries (RSR)”, with important achievements recorded during the first year of implementation.

🌱 Multi-location Trials Completed in the 2025–2026 Winter–Spring Season

During the first year of the project, multi-location ecological trials were successfully conducted at three major rice-growing areas in Vietnam: Can Tho, An Giang, and D**g Thap, during the 2025–2026 Winter–Spring season.

The trials aimed to evaluate the adaptability, agronomic performance, yield potential, and stability of promising rice breeding lines under different agroecological conditions. The data generated from these trials provide an important scientific basis for selecting elite lines and supporting subsequent variety registration and release.

🌾 Multi-location Trials Continue in the 2026 Summer–Autumn Season

Following the completion of the first-season trials, the project team has continued conducting multi-location ecological trials during the 2026 Summer–Autumn season at the same three experimental sites.

Current progress includes:

📍 Can Tho: The experimental materials have reached the maturity stage. The research team is currently collecting data on agronomic traits, yield, and yield components.

📍 An Giang: Data collection has been completed, and all experimental plots have been successfully harvested following the project protocol.

📍 D**g Thap: Data collection has also been completed, with all experimental plots successfully harvested according to the experimental design.

Conducting synchronized trials across different agroecological environments enables the research team to comprehensively assess the adaptability, yield performance, and stability of candidate rice lines under diverse production conditions.

The progress achieved so far provides a strong foundation for the next steps of the RSR project, contributing to the registration and dissemination of stress-tolerant rice varieties and supporting more sustainable and climate-resilient rice production in Vietnam and other AFACI member countries.

[VIDEO | VTV10] LOW-EMISSION RICE PRODUCTION: SOLUTIONS AND INNOVATIONS

On July 22, 2026, in Can Tho City, an international workshop themed “Low-Emission Rice Solutions in Asia: Regional Innovation and Scaling-Up Roadmap” brought together more than 100 delegates, including scientists, policymakers, and experts from over 10 Asian countries.

The workshop provided a platform for sharing research findings, experiences, and innovative solutions to promote low-emission, sustainable, and climate-resilient rice production, while exploring pathways for scaling up successful practices across the region.

WORKSHOP SERIES ON LOW-EMISSION RICE PRODUCTION IN ASIA

From July 22–24, 2026, in Can Tho City, the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS), in collaboration with international partners including the Asian Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI), Food and Fertilizer Technology Center for the Asian and Pacific Region (FFTC), National Agriculture and Food Research Organization of Japan (NARO), and Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS), organized a series of workshops under the theme “Innovation for Low-Emission Rice Production in Asia.”

The workshop series aimed to promote innovation, knowledge exchange, and technical solutions for sustainable, climate-resilient, and low-emission rice production in Asia.

News from the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS)

The Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS) has published a news update on the International Workshop on "Low-Emission Rice Solutions in Asia: Regional Innovations and Pathways for Scaling Up," held in Can Tho City, Vietnam, from 22 to 24 July 2026.

The workshop was co-organized by the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS), the Asian Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI), the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center (FFTC), the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO), Japan, the Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS), and other international partners.

About the AFACI Regional Seed Rice (RSR) Project

The AFACI Regional Seed Rice (RSR) Project, entitled "Accelerate Variety Registration and Seed Distribution of Stress-Tolerant Rice Varieties," is implemented during 2025–2029 under the Asian Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI) in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and partner institutions in AFACI member countries.

The project aims to accelerate the evaluation, registration, and dissemination of stress-tolerant rice varieties while strengthening national seed systems and regional collaboration. By improving farmers' access to high-quality rice varieties adapted to climate-related stresses, the project contributes to climate-resilient, sustainable, and low-emission rice production across Asia.

Bringing Science to the Field for Low-Emission Rice Production

Scientific innovation and international cooperation are playing an increasingly important role in transforming rice production towards greater sustainability and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

A recent article published by the Government News highlights Vietnam's efforts to bring scientific research closer to farmers, promoting low-emission rice production through practical technologies and collaborative initiatives. The article also features the recent technical workshop, where experts, researchers, and development partners exchanged knowledge and experiences to support sustainable rice value chains.

As a member of the Asian Food and Agriculture Cooperation Initiative (AFACI), Vietnam continues to strengthen regional cooperation in advancing climate-smart agriculture and sustainable food systems.

Vietnam Participates in the AFACI Soil+ Regional Capacity Building Workshop in Thailand

Vietnam joined representatives from 12 AFACI member countries at the AFACI Soil+ Regional Capacity Building Workshop, held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 22–27 June 2026. The workshop was jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Thailand's Land Development Department (LDD) as part of the capacity-building activities of the AFACI Soil+ Project.

The workshop provided intensive technical training on nutrient budget mapping, soil erosion modelling, soil health assessment, and the publication of digital soil maps through National Soil Information Systems. Participants worked directly with their own national datasets, strengthening practical skills that will support the continued development of soil information systems in their respective countries.

Vietnam was represented by Dr. Vu Manh Quyet from the Soil and Fertilizer Research Institute (SFRI), the implementing institution in Vietnam of the AFACI project "National Soil Information System to Support Agri-food System Transformation in AFACI Member Countries (AFACI Soil Project Phase II)." During the country presentation session, Dr. Quyet shared Vietnam's progress in implementing the project, including achievements in soil profile surveys, soil database development, digital soil mapping, and the establishment of the National Soil Information System.

The workshop also served as a valuable platform for participating countries to exchange experiences gained throughout the implementation of the AFACI Soil Project over the past seven years. Discussions highlighted the importance of sustaining national soil information systems through continued investment, technical capacity development, and regional collaboration.

A key outcome of the workshop was the strong commitment of participating countries to further develop and operationalize their National Soil Information Systems, contributing to sustainable land management, evidence-based agricultural planning, and climate-resilient agri-food systems across the region.

The programme concluded with a technical field visit to the Khao Hin Sorn Royal Development Study Centre and the Land Development Learning Center in eastern Thailand, where participants observed practical approaches to soil rehabilitation and sustainable land management.

📍 About Vietnam's AFACI Soil Project

The project "National Soil Information System to Support Agri-food System Transformation in AFACI Member Countries (AFACI Soil Project Phase II)" is implemented in Vietnam by the Soil and Fertilizer Research Institute (SFRI) from October 2023 to September 2026, contributing to the development of a modern National Soil Information System and supporting sustainable agricultural development in Vietnam.

Soil Sampling and Laboratory Analysis Support the Development of Vietnam's National Soil Information System

As part of the implementation of the AFACI Soil Project Phase II, the project team of the Soil and Fertilizer Institute Research Institute (SFRI) has successfully completed field soil surveys, sampling, and laboratory analyses to strengthen the national soil database for the development and updating of thematic soil maps.

To date, 21 soil profiles have been investigated across seven areas in 6 provinces in Southern Vietnam: Ba Ria–Vung Tau in Ho Chi Minh city), Ben Tre and Tra Vinh in Vinh Long province, Binh Phuoc in D**g Nai province, Binh Thuan in Lam D**g province, Hau Giang in Can Thơ province; and Tay Ninh province.

The collected soil samples are being analyzed for their physical and chemical properties to generate high-quality soil data. The results will contribute to the development and updating of thematic soil maps, support the National Soil Information System, and enhance sustainable soil resource management for resilient agri-food systems.

About the Project

This activity is conducted under the project "National Soil Information System to Support Agri-food System Transformation in AFACI Member Countries (AFACI Soil Project Phase II)", implemented by the Soils and Fertilizers Institute (SFI), Vietnam, under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Minh Tien. The project is carried out from October 2023 to September 2026.

The AFACI Soil Initiative builds upon the Development of the Soil Atlas of Asia and National Soil Information System, a regional initiative aimed at strengthening soil information systems through soil data collection, mapping, and information sharing. The initiative supports sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, environmental protection, and evidence-based policymaking across Asia.

The initiative brings together 14 partners: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
