You would not know it by looking at this picture, but Papa Joe had surgery this morning. He had a lumbar decompression. As he described it to me (Katie, his favorite daughter), his surgeon cut down to the vertebra and chipped out the bone that was pressing on the nerve. This did not stop him from coming in tonight for a glass of w**e. He’s doing great, and while he is off from his day job for the next few weeks, expect to see a lot of him at the bar. You can also expect to see his kids yelling at him to go home and rest, and he will resist every time. Testa dura. Look it up 😂

Papa Joe’s verdict on the first annual Judgement of Zelienople: This was a big win for us.

Six Papa Joe w**es went head-to-head in a completely blind tasting against six respected w**es from California, New York and Italy. The public preferred Papa Joe’s in 2 of the 6 matchups, while our industry judges preferred Papa Joe’s in 4 of 6—selecting our Primitivo, Nero d’Avola, Aglianico and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The numbers tell an even better story. Every Papa Joe w**e was highly competitive in the judges’ scoring, including our Dry Riesling and Petite Sirah in the two matchups won by the challengers. Our Primitivo received an industry score of 90.3, and our Cabernet Sauvignon scored 90.

We weren’t looking for an easy victory. We deliberately put our w**es beside some damn good competition, served everything blind and let the glasses do the talking. Papa Joe’s more than held its own.

Thank you to our industry judges, our public judges and everyone who helped make the first Judgement of Zelienople such a memorable afternoon. We’re already looking forward to the rematch next year.
