In the build up to Sense we will be profiling the participating wineries. Todays profile will be Napa Power House Dominus!

In the late 1960s, while attending the University of California of Davis, Christian Moueix fell in love with the Napa Valley and its wines. Son of Jean-Pierre Moueix, the famed wine merchant and producer from Libourne, France, Moueix returned home in 1970 to manage the family vineyards, including Chateaux Petrus, La Fleur-Petrus, Trotanoy in Pomerol and Magdelaine in Saint Emilion.

His love of Napa Valley lingered and in 1981, he discovered the historic Napanook Vineyad, a 124 acre site west of Yountvile that had been the source of fruit for some of the finest Napa Valley wines in the 1940s & 1950s. In 1982, Moueix enterd into a partnership to develope the vineyard and in 1995, became its sole owner. He chose the name 'Dominus' or 'Lord of The Estate' in Latin to underscore his longstanding commitment to the stewardship of the land.

Mark Herold’s fascination with wine started in his childhood home in Panama City. On his twelfth birthday he liberated a bottle of Port from his father's cellar. Undeterred from the horrendous hangover that followed the next morning, he set about to learn as much as he could about wine. After completing his academic career at the University of Davis with a Ph.D. in Ecology with an emphasis in nutritional biochemistry, he started his first foray into the wine world at Joseph Phelps Vineyards as the Research Enologist. Here Mark was able to bridge the scientific method with winemaking to determine the best approach to making the best expression of wine quality and seamless oak integration.

Merus was a labor of love that Mark started in 1998—a Cult Cabernet Sauvignon that he made in his garage in downtown Napa. His first vintage was extremely challenging weather wise as well as having limited access to equipment. Aside from all the challenges the 1998 Merus received 93 points from Robert Parker. Mark started his consulting business soon after with a client list that has included Hestan, Kamen, Harris, Buccella, Kobalt, Celani Family Vineyards, Maze and The Vineyardist.

I've dedicated my life to the pursuit of making great wine. Countless number of loyal customers have told me that they envy the move I made and wish that they too could drop everything to pursue their dream, whether it be wine, art, food or whatever.

Well take it from me, the son of a carpenter and a person who discovered his love for wine by being a waiter in Dallas, that anything is possible when you relinquish to your passion and start with WHY you wish to do it. Blankiet Estate is nestled high on the western foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains above Yountville. The vineyard, named Paradise Hills, is planted on one of the most acclaimed viticultural areas of the Napa Valley. The Estate was created in 1996 by Claude & Katherine Blankiet with the single vision of producing wines in the tradition of the great Bordeaux First Growth.

Napanook is a blend of Bordeaux varietals specifically selected from the estate vineyard for their lively fruit and bold character. Napanook wines are youthful and exuberant, meant to be enjoyed regularly when a more casual wine is called for.

Winery #7, Clos Valmi, Yountville

Clos Valmi is operated by 88 year old owner Ted Astorian. Ted used to run a fairly size able wine import/export business but when he sold that his passion for wine was not included in the sale.

He located a 15 acre hillside piece of property in the north eastern part of the Yountville appellation. From the estate Ted produces Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Elegance and balance are hallmarks of Clos Valmi's wines. The Pinot Noir has an inviting nose of red fruits - raspberry and watermelon with aromas of red licorice. Cabernet Sauvignon is a bright red fruit, black licorice and hints of leather show on the bouquet followed by a palate that is elegant and rounded upon entry. The wine is soft from start to finish.
For a boutique Napa producer Ted's wines are one of the best deals in Napa Valley.
