🇺🇸HISTORIC FORT RANDALL🇺🇸

While you’re in Pickstown for Uncovering Historic Pickstown, don’t forget to swing by the historic site of Fort Randall for a walking tour

The site for the fort was selected in 1856 by General William S. Harney. The fort served as a strategic site on the river to defend two lines of transportation; it operated for 36 years. It was named for Colonel Daniel Randall, a career Army officer who also served as Deputy Paymaster General of the Army

Famous visitors to Fort Randall included “Buffalo Bill” Cody, mountain man Jim Bridger , and Gen. Phil Sheridan. Hunkpapa leader Sitting Bull was also held prisoner at the Fort.

After serving as an important base in the Indian Wars, Fort Randall closed in 1892.

Specialist Moses Brave Heart of the South Dakota Army National Guard received a religious accommodation from the U.S. Army. The Oglala Sioux soldier can now grow his hair long and wear traditional Sioux head decorations including an eagle feather for official Army portraits. He follows the Army female grooming standards for length and style. Brave Heart began growing his hair out after the approval came through in 2023.

This step means a lot for Native soldiers who want to serve while staying connected to their culture. Brave Heart shows quiet strength by standing up for his identity in the military. His story highlights growing respect for Indigenous traditions and opens the door for others to seek similar accommodations. Many in Native communities see it as progress toward true inclusion.

This victory celebrates the beauty of honoring who you are while defending your country.

Sitting Bull Leads His People into Canada

On this day in 1877, Sitting Bull left his traditional homeland in Montana and led his people north across the border into Canada.

There, his band remained in what they called the “Grandmother’s Country”—named in reference to Queen Victoria—for the next four years.

This moment reflects both the resilience of the Lakota people and the difficult choices faced in preserving their way of life.

On April 27, 1877, nearly a year after the Battle of Little Big Horn, Chief Red Cloud talks Crazy Horse in to giving up the fight.

Spotted Tail (Crazy Horse's uncle) failed in an earlier attempt to get him to surrender, so General George Crook sent Red Cloud to talk to Crazy Horse. Crook promises a reservation for him and his followers in the Powder River area.

While sitting on a blanket with Red Cloud, Crazy Horse removed ...his shirt and gave it to Red Cloud as a symbol of surrender. He Dog and Little Big Man walked with Crazy Horse to the Red Cloud Agency near Fort Robinson in northwestern Nebraska.

61 years ago today, at 3:15 pm Eastern, the Civil Rights Movement lost one of its brightest hopes through an assassination at the Audubon Ballroom. At 39 years of age, Malcolm X had so much more to offer us, but we will never know what might have come of that fire; that intelligence; that eloquence...we'll never know.
