From Don Wurtz’s sister, Wendy:
With profound sadness I must tell all of the “lovers of Wurtzie” out there that Wurtzie passed peacefully yesterday, in his favorite chair at home. The exact cause is unknown but he had been experiencing some chest pain several days earlier which he thought was probably muscle pain. It seemed to be getting better so we were both relieved about that. He felt well enough Saturday to have a tooth pulled so he clearly was not experiencing heart attack symptoms on Saturday. The other cause may have been Sleep Apnea which he had a terrible case of, and in true stubborn German fashion, refused to use a CPAP for. My brother was one of a kind, in the best way. He was possibly the most thoughtful individual I have ever known. He would do anything, and I mean anything, if it would help someone out. He could not say no. He was an amazing son to my mother after our Dad passed in 1987. He was at her beck and call 24 hours a day. He was the kindest brother to both Nancy and myself. He didn’t have it in him to be mean. He was a loving uncle and mentor to his niece and nephews. He loved all of his John’s buffet compatriots and missed all the “regulars” terribly when the bar closed. Don will also miss and be missed by his AA friends. He was extremely proud of his almost 18 years of sobriety. The good news is that Donnie died a happy man. In the past year of his life he reconnected with an old girlfriend, Tina Warner Quinn, with whom he had once bartended at John’s. He truly felt that she was his soulmate and was “over the moon” about her. I am so grateful to her for making his last year the best of his life. May he rest in peace with Dad, Mom and Nancy. No services are planned as Donnie hated to have to go to wakes and would want to spare everyone else for having to do so. That’s my brother in a nutshell!
