Windber Brewing Company
Opening day was May 31, 1904. Actual construction work for a 175-by-60-feet building began in March, 1903, by Bellinger Brothers, Pittsburgh contractors. Frank Lo

wery was given the contract to furnish stone and W.P. F.M. Becker, Pittsburgh, was the first manager and secretary and Peter Fensel, the brewmaster. Offices were A.E. Benford, president; John E,- Seymore, Tresurer; and Adolp F. Godel, vice president. Other directors included C.J. McGurgen, Pittsburgh; C.P. Monahan Greensburg; and George Eckert, Jeannette. The four-story building was equipped with electric lights and its own steam heat plant. In the boilerroom, an artesian well with a depth of 70 feet was utilized. The bottling works was across 16th Street from the main building. To the rear, a stable with eight stalls was located. Deliveries were by horse and wagon. There was an ice plant with a daily capacity of ten tons. Tanks, coolers, bins, grain elevator, hoppers, cookers, kettles, boilers, pumps, engines and refrigerating machines were located in the main structure. The fermenting room had 12 tanks each with a capacity of 125 barrels. The cellar contained 12 vats capable of storing 2,700 barrels of brew. A large warehouse for kegs and barrels was situated east of the brewery along the railroad tracks. The total cost of construction was about $125,000 and was designed to produce 30,000 barrels of beer per year. In the 1930's, the beer carried the Windber label and included Old German, Old Heidelberg and Old London Ale. The brewery closed in 1939. Today, what remains of the building is used by Baumgardner Motors and The Town Tavern at the corner of Graham Avenue and 17th Street.
