A $100,000 income in the 1990s felt safe — because it truly was.

To match that purchasing power now, you'd need about $250,000 or more per year.

And that doesn't even include items that have outpaced inflation.

Consider what "middle class" used to include:

• Owning your own home
• Two dependable cars
• Regular family vacations
• Kids' extracurriculars
• Saving for your children's college
• Putting money into retirement
• Having health insurance
• Some money left over each month

For many households, that was achievable on a single solid income.

Today, it often feels unattainable even with two earners.

Back then:

• Median home price: roughly $130,000
• New car: about $15,000
• Gas: around $1.20 per gallon
• State college tuition: roughly $3,000 per year

Today:

• Median home price: roughly $420,000
• New car: $50,000 or more
• Gas: about $3.50 per gallon
• State college tuition: roughly $11,000 per year

Which is why many people say:

"I earn more than my parents did, yet I feel worse off financially."

It's not simply due to lifestyle inflation.

Many of life's largest costs have just become much pricier.
