Gyppo Ale Mill

Gyppo Ale Mill Shelter Cove Restaurant, Brewery & Beer Garden... In the same spirit as the craft beer industry, A Gyppo logging operation was small & self-reliant.

The Gyppo logger was reckless & daring & did what they had to get the job done. Here at the Gyppo Ale Mill, we celebrate that spirt & raise a pint to all the Gyppos out there, living a freewheeling & independent life. Perched on the edge of the world, along the longest stretch of coastal wilderness in the lower 48, is where you will find the Gyppo Ale Mill, California most remote restaurant & br

ewery. Gyppo offers a from scratch & locally sourced food menu that shifts with the changes of the seasons as well as 12 beers on tap. If life brings you the "Real Northern California", that place 4 hours north of San Francisco, do yourself a favor, take a turn off the 101. Twenty-One miles of winding road is just the beginning of the epic adventure you are about to take!

When Ken first approached us about hosting Paint & Sip nights, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect.

This is now our third one, and every single class has filled up. The funny part is that most people walk in convinced they aren't creative. Then two hours later they're standing next to a canvas they can't stop smiling about. Ken has a gift for making people feel comfortable, keeping things light, and reminding everyone that this is supposed to be fun. Tonight we're painting the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse, one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Lost Coast.

Our next Paint & Sip is Tuesday 06/02 at 6PM. Grab you seat using this link:

People picture brewing as recipe development and beer tastings. Bryan would probably laugh at that. On any given day he's cleaning tanks, washing floors, moving kegs, filling cans, checking gravities, fixing equipment, and somewhere in the middle of all that, making beer. Most of the work happens long before a pint ever reaches your table. The goal is simple: keep the brewery running well enough that nobody notices all the work happening behind the scenes.

Next time you raise a glass, know there was a lot more than brewing involved.

Some people find Shelter Cove after a 25-mile hike. Some arrive by private plane. Bruno showed up on two wheels, making his way from British Columbia to Baja with a stop here in the middle. One of the things we love most about this place is how often complete strangers end up sharing a room, swapping stories, and heading back out into the world a little later than they planned.

Safe travels, Bruno.

A pint is easy. Making somebody feel welcome is the hard part. Travi somehow manages to do both at the same time. Whether you're here every week or it's your first time on the Lost Coast, he's one of the people helping turn a brewery into a place people come back to again and again.

JOIN THE KITCHEN CREW - We're looking for one more person to join our culinary team.

A lot of people assume you need restaurant experience to work in a kitchen. You don't.

What you do need is a willingness to learn, a strong work ethic, and the ability to stay calm when things get busy. The rest, we can teach. We've built an incredible culinary team that works hard, supports each other, jokes around, and takes pride in sending out great food every day. Some days are fast. Some days are challenging. Most days involve a lot of laughter mixed in with the hard work.

If you're looking for a place where you can learn real skills, be part of a great team, and build something alongside good people, we'd love to hear from you.

Apply online at gyppo.com/careers or stop by during business hours and fill out an application. If we think it's a good fit, we'll reach out.

We thought Paint & Sip would be a fun one-off. Turns out you all had other plans. Every event so far has filled with locals, visitors, friends, couples, and people who swore up and down they weren’t creative… right before painting something they couldn’t stop smiling about. So we’re officially making it a monthly tradition. Starting June 2, Paint & Sip with Ken Nunes will happen every first Tuesday at Gyppo, featuring different Lost Coast scenes each month. This round is the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse, and Ken makes the whole thing easy, relaxed, and surprisingly addicting. No experience needed, just a willingness to show up and have fun.

$50 gets you all supplies, guidance from Ken, and a night that usually ends with way more laughter than expected. Grab your seat before this one sells out too.

We recommend you reserve your seat using this $20 payment link: https://buy.stripe.com/cNifZg7642mw6KG9Pbak00u

Somehow this little corner of the Lost Coast keeps finding ways to stay interesting. Wednesday is Battle of the Bags with David Gilchrist, which at this point feels less like a tournament and more like a standing community tradition. Thursday, Heather Gray brings line dancing back to the taproom, and every week someone swears they’re “just watching” before ending up in the middle of the floor. Then we roll into a full live music weekend with 3D Man on Friday bringing the indie/post-punk vibes and the Funnicators on Saturday with blues, soul, and the kind of music that pairs perfectly with a fresh pint and staying out later than planned.

Check the calendar, send the group text, and come spend a few evenings where the pace slows down a little.

MEMORIAL DAY HOURS! wide open lost coast

Happy Memorial Day from the Lost Coast. We’re open at noon today, and honestly this photo says a lot about why people come out here in the first place. Big sky, empty beaches, ocean air, and room to slow down for a minute. Heading into summer, we’ve also expanded lunch service at Gyppo. We’re now serving lunch Wednesday through Monday from 12–8 PM, with Tuesdays becoming our only dinner-only day. More afternoons for a post-beach burger, a cold lager, or just sitting somewhere that doesn’t ask you to rush.

If you find yourself out at Black Sands today, come warm up with us after.

“Gyppo” comes from old Humboldt logging slang for small independent operators. That mindset still runs through everything here, including the brewery. Small batches. Real hands. Long brew days. Beer that changes with the seasons instead of tasting identical forever because a corporate spreadsheet says it should. This photo feels like the perfect snapshot of that spirit. A few people working together in a brewery at the edge of California because they believe this coast deserves something made with care.

Come grab a pint brewed with a little stubbornness behind it.
