Gyppo Ale Mill

Gyppo Ale Mill Shelter Cove Restaurant, Brewery & Beer Garden... In the same spirit as the craft beer industry, A Gyppo logging operation was small & self-reliant.
(332)

The Gyppo logger was reckless & daring & did what they had to get the job done. Here at the Gyppo Ale Mill, we celebrate that spirt & raise a pint to all the Gyppos out there, living a freewheeling & independent life. Perched on the edge of the world, along the longest stretch of coastal wilderness in the lower 48, is where you will find the Gyppo Ale Mill, California most remote restaurant & br

ewery. Gyppo offers a from scratch & locally sourced food menu that shifts with the changes of the seasons as well as 12 beers on tap. If life brings you the "Real Northern California", that place 4 hours north of San Francisco, do yourself a favor, take a turn off the 101. Twenty-One miles of winding road is just the beginning of the epic adventure you are about to take!

A FAMILIAR FACE
Visitors usually come here for the scenery. The ocean views get the attention first, followed by the hiking trails, wildlife, and sunsets. But after a few days, many people discover the thing they end up talking about most isn't the landscape at allβ€”it's the people. The person who remembers their name. The bartender who asks how their fishing trip went. The stranger who becomes a friend halfway through a conversation. This photo of Eric making a cocktail reminded me that hospitality has very little to do with food or drinks. Those things matter, of course, but what people remember is how they felt while they were here. Whether someone was genuinely happy they walked through the door.

That's always been the goal at Gyppo. Good food and good drinks bring people together, but it's the relationships that keep people coming back year after year. Pull up a chair, say hello, and stay awhile.

THE COURTS ARE FULL
A lot of people talk about building community. Far fewer people actually build something that brings people together. Over eight years ago, these pickleball/basketball courts were just an ideaβ€”a project people hoped would happen someday. Today they're full of neighbors meeting neighbors, friendly rivalries forming, visitors getting pulled into games, and people finding one more reason to spend an afternoon outside. What I love most isn't really the pickleball and basketball itself. It's watching a new gathering place emerge. Every town needs spaces where people naturally run into each other, strike up conversations, and become friends without even realizing it's happening. That's what these courts have quickly become.

Congratulations to everyone who helped make this happen. You've created something much bigger than a place to play. If you haven't checked out the courts yet, grab your paddle, join a game, and then swing by Gyppo afterward to tell us how it went.

THREE GENERATIONS
Father's Day has a way of making us look both forward and backward at the same time.

The photo shows Josh my husband and one of Gyppo's brewer's, our daughter, and Josh's dad, David, who everyone knew as Bop. The other photo is my Papa enjoying a beer at Gyppo. Looking at these photos now, what stands out isn't just the family connectionβ€”it's how much both of these men were part of the Gyppo story.

Long before the doors opened, they were helping, encouraging, showing up, and believing in what we were trying to build. They celebrated the wins, helped us through the challenges, and became familiar faces around the brewery. If you've been coming here for a while, chances are you knew them both.

Neither of them are with us anymore, but their fingerprints are all over this place. In the values we try to lead with. In the way we treat people. In the stories we still tell. In the community they helped us create.

Today we're celebrating all the fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers, mentors, and father figures who shape our lives in ways both big and small. The ones lucky enough to be sitting beside us today, and the ones whose influence remains long after they're gone.

Happy Father's Day to all the dads here with us and those whose legacy lives on through the people they loved.

A few nights ago, Persia from our kitchen sent me this photo. She had been out enjoying the coast when she caught this moment: seals stretched out on the rocks, the sun dropping into the Pacific, and one of those evenings that reminds you why people fall in love with this place.

One of the things I love about our team is how much they genuinely enjoy living here. Whether it's surfing before a shift, hiking on a day off, or texting me photos like this one, they experience the Lost Coast the same way our visitors doβ€”with a sense of appreciation that never really gets old.

Summer officially begins tomorrow. The days are long. The ocean is putting on a show.

Here's to another season on the Lost Coast.

THE REGULARS
Restaurants spend a lot of time talking about food and drinks. What they don't talk about enough are the people who keep showing up.

Over time, something shifts. Guests become familiar faces. Familiar faces become friends. Friends become part of the rhythm of the place. This photo of Travis serving our dear friend Layne captures one of those everyday moments that probably wouldn't mean much to a stranger but means quite a bit to us.

A place isn't built by the people who own it. It's built by the people who choose to come back.

Thanks for being part of it.

A TOWN THAT MAKES ITS OWN FUN
One of my favorite things about small towns is that nobody waits around for entertainment to arrive. We make it ourselves.

A few years ago, if someone had told me we'd regularly have dozens of people line dancing in Shelter Cove, I probably would have laughed. Yet here we are. Every week new people show up, someone teaches the steps, everybody gets turned around at least once, and somehow by the end of the night it all works out.

Line dancing with Heather Gray is back tonight at 6 PM. Whether you've never danced before or you've been coming every week, you're welcome.

Grab dinner, a drink, and join the fun.

THIS WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE A THING
Like many good ideas, Mexi-Punk happened somewhat by accident.

Someone mixed our Mexican Lager with a splash of Whistle Punk IPA. Then somebody else ordered one. Then somebody else. Before long we realized people were intentionally asking for it by name. The result is crisp, refreshing, and just hoppy enough to make things interesting.

We finally decided to stop pretending it was a secret menu item and put it on tap. Sometimes customers tell us what they want before we figure it out ourselves.

Come try a schooner and see what all the fuss is about.

TAKING APPLICATION FOR TWO SERVER POSITIONS

This photo was taken last summer around the fire pit. Some of these crew members have moved on, some are still here, and a few somehow managed to do both. Claire graduated college (CONGRATULATIONS!) and we are eagerly awaiting her return.

One of the most rewarding parts of running Gyppo has been watching people grow. A summer job turns into leadership. A new hire becomes a mentor. A shy teenager becomes someone who can handle a packed Saturday night with confidence and grace. We don't always get everything right, but we've been incredibly lucky with the people who choose to work here.

We're looking for two more servers to join the team this summer. If you're hardworking, kind, and enjoy being around people, we'd love to meet you. Stop by and fill out an application. We want to meet you!

PEOPLE COME FROM ALL OVER FOR THIS

Every year people travel from around the world to hike the Lost Coast Trail.

Some spend months planning the trip. They study tide charts, organize shuttle rides, pack everything they need, and set out to experience one of the most rugged and beautiful stretches of coastline left in California. It's not the easiest hike, which is part of what makes it special.

What I love most is hearing the stories afterward. The wildlife sightings. The weather. The moments that didn't go according to plan. The people they met along the way. No two hikes ever seem to be exactly the same.

We're lucky to call this place home.

If you've hiked the Lost Coast Trail, where are you visiting from?

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PLATES

Most guests see a finished meal arrive at the table.

What they don't always see are the people behind it. Erin somehow manages to find the positive side of absolutely everything. She's one of those rare people who can trip on the stairs and somehow be excited she got downstairs faster. Bryan is constantly taking care of things nobody asked him to do and nobody realizes got done. The kind of person who will get up at three in the morning to deal with an alarm issue just because he knows it needs to be handled.

And then there's Joe. He has somehow convinced half the world that he's grumpy, which is funny because he's actually one of the kindest people I know. Together, these three help create the experience people have when they walk through our doors, and Gyppo wouldn't be Gyppo without them.

We're pretty lucky to work alongside people like this.
