If you've met Vitali, you know. And if you haven't, I highly recommend pulling up a stool at the Gyppo bar and introducing yourself. The guy is hilarious. He's proud of his Russian roots, has a personality about ten times bigger than the bar itself, and I swear he was born to be a bartender. Give him a few minutes and you'll understand what I mean.

So naturally, when we started playing around with new cocktails, Vitali created the Cove Russian. Creamy, smooth, with a little dusting of nutmeg across the top, and a whole lot of Vitali's personality behind it. I love watching our crew come up with their own creations, especially when the drinks have a story and a person attached to them.

Next time you're at Gyppo, order a Cove Russian and strike up a conversation with the man who made it. Trust me, the cocktail is only half the entertainment.

Look at this crew! When Tathi asked if Gyppo would sponsor the soccer team, how could we say no? Tathi and Joel aren't just neighbors, family and most importantly, our friends! Seeing GYPPO ALE MILL across the backs of all those little jerseys makes me pretty darn happy.

But I really want to give Joel some love. He's coaching this crew, and if you've driven past the soccer fields in Redway lately, have you seen how incredible they look? Joel and his team have been putting in an unbelievable amount of work. Fixing waterlines, mulching, getting the grass healthy, and spending countless hours doing all the things nobody notices until suddenly the fields look fantastic.

It's easy to take places like that for granted, but they don't look that good by accident. They look that good because people like Joel care enough to keep showing up and doing the work. We're pretty lucky to have him in our family, and the whole community is lucky to have him too.

Go team Gyppo! And a huge thank-you to Joel, Tathi, and everyone helping keep those fields and these kids thriving.

Leave it to D. Perkins Events to make a coffin look cool! If you've been to one of her beautifully planned weddings or seen the incredible work she puts into our community, you know she's got a serious creative streak. From organizing the Storm Run to coordinating roadside cleanups, she's always making things happen out here. And now she's brought that creativity to Gyppo with a brand-new photo opportunity, just in time for Halloween!

So naturally, we think this calls for a contest. Zombie? Vampire? Fairy? Bride of Frankenstein? Come as you are or get completely ridiculous. Climb in, strike a pose, and post your photo tagging Gyppo Ale Mill and D. Perkins Events. We'll share the entries, and the photo with the most likes wins a Gyppo gift card!

Apparently, October is when the kitchen gets permission to put an enormous bratwurst on a plate and surround it with all the things you'd want to eat while drinking a cold b**r. Soft pretzel, coarse mustard, sauerkraut, warm b**r cheese. Nothing particularly delicate happening here.

We've been having a lot of fun with our October specials. There's the Bavarian brat, the full platter, and currywurst for anybody who thinks a perfectly good sausage could use a little more sauce and a pile of fries. It's salty, crispy, rich, a little messy, and exactly what sounds good after a cool afternoon on the coast.

Summer has its fish tacos and sunny afternoons. Fall gets a different kind of appetite.

Come hungry. We have opinions about how much mustard is enough.

Lonny came to Gyppo, won our Steinholding contest, then headed to Quincy for the California State Steinholding Championship at Quintopia and won that too. So now our guy is officially headed to Cincinnati to represent California at nationals.

He made the trip last year and came home knowing exactly what he's up against. The guy who beat him held on forever and set the bar painfully high, so Lonny's got some work to do. The training part is on him. The getting-him-to-Ohio part is on us.

Travel from the Lost Coast to Cincinnati is no small thing, so we've launched a Givebutter fundraiser with a $3,000 goal to help cover the trip. If you've ever stood in the b**r garden watching a bunch of grown adults hold full steins out in front of them while the crowd completely loses its mind, you already understand why we love this.

I'm proud to announce that I took second place at Paradise Royale this weekend. Before anyone gets too impressed, I should probably mention there were only two people in my category. Still. Second place. I have a medal to prove it, and I'm not giving it back.

Joking aside, what a freaking epic day. The King Range, the climbing, the burning legs, and that incredible energy at the finish. A huge thank-you to the Mountain Bike Tribal Trail Alliance. I've worked with these guys for years, and I'm continually impressed by their professionalism and how smoothly they pull off an event like this. Even with rangers out checking permits this year, they handled everything without missing a beat.

And beyond the race, they're doing incredible work getting kids onto mountain bikes, including purchasing dozens of bikes for youth programs. If you're looking for an organization worth supporting, check them out.

Come for the coast. Bring your bike if you've got one.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16 — WE'RE CLOSED!

We're closing Gyppo this Friday for our sold-out Land. Water. Hands. five-course dinner with Briceland Forest Farm!

Our kitchen will be busy turning beautiful locally grown ingredients into five courses for 45 guests, and we can't wait to see how it all comes together. A huge thank-you to everyone who reserved a seat!

But just because we're closed doesn't mean you should go hungry. If you're heading down to Shelter Cove, please go show some love to our friends at Shelter Cove Campground & Deli, Delgado's Pizza, and Mi Mochima! We're lucky to have these folks feeding our little community, and they'd love to see you.

We've been working our way through the menu for Friday's Land. Water. Hands. dinner with Briceland Forest Farm, and this little cast-iron skillet is what we're sending out at the very end. Brown-butter cake, a cool creamy topping, and a piece of pumpkin brittle we've been experimenting with in the kitchen. It's a lot of work for something that's going to disappear in about four bites.

That's the fun of these dinners. We get to slow down, play with ingredients, fuss over the little details, and build a meal around what our neighbors are growing. Daniel and Taylor from Briceland Forest Farm will be joining us, and all 45 seats are officially sold out!

If you missed this one, reservations are now open for our annual Forager's Feast on Friday, November 13. Another five courses, this time celebrating the wild ingredients and people who know their way around the forests of the Lost Coast.

October is sold out. November is calling. Come hungry and a little curious.

Remember when I told you we were closing Gyppo because half the staff wanted to see Steel Pulse? Well, we did it. We grabbed pizza at The Lost Frenchman, headed to the Mateel, and danced our asses off. Watching my crew let loose after a long tourist season was pretty fantastic. We even brought along a few cases of Gyppo b**r to donate.

But what really struck me was looking around that room. Teenagers, twenty-somethings, parents, grandparents, people in their seventies, all dancing together. That's what makes the Mateel Community Center so special. Steel Pulse has been bringing their music and message to our little corner of the world for years, and in a community that's been through some hard times, nights like this mean a lot. Different generations, different lives, all sharing the same dance floor.

By the end of the night, we were sweaty, exhausted, and ridiculously happy. And getting to experience that alongside the people I work with every day made it even better.

Thank you to the Mateel, Steel Pulse, and everyone who keeps live music alive out here. We needed that night.
