Letās talk a little bit about proper handling from that moment you fill your tag to getting it into the back of your pick up. The end result of your mount starts here. Even if your on the fence about mounting that animal, treat it like you are going to.
My biggest recommendation is buy yourself a jet sled, deer cart or a simple tarp to wrap it up in before dragging. If you can, do your best to avoid dragging that bad Larry across the ground, especially long distances an rocky terrain - you are risking drag damange like in this photo where the hairs break, shaves down and often scraped it off down to the skin. You also end up with more dirt, water and what ever other debree getting embedded in the fur which could speed up bacterial growth and cause slippage. Obviously not all circumstances will allow you to have extra drag equipment on hand, but success and minimizing error really does come down to being prepared for every situation youāll find yourself in as a hunter. You want a good mount, be prepared and have an extraction game plan in place.
A lot of damage can be fixed but some leave you s**t out of luck or cost you a lot more money in the end. Increased time on a mount generally equates to an increased total on your taxidermy bill. Show up prepared, handle with care and youāll see better results! I canāt express that enough.
