One of the greatest things you will have to survive in your career is your deep love for the job when others take it for granted, treating it like a hobby.

The reason is you see what you do as a calling to a noble profession that requires you to be the best you can, and they see it as a paycheck, schedule, and opportunity to have the title with none of the work.

That’s going to eat you up from the inside out if you don’t figure out how to manage that.

I will tell you what not to do based on my many mistakes in dealing with this. First off, don’t let anger become your default position every time you encounter someone like this because, truth be told, they could care less that you are angry, and now you’re carrying that around with you.
You are allowing their incompetence to affect your attitude.

Don’t be abrasive toward them because if there is any chance of bringing them over from the dark side, you lose it by being a jerk. It doesn’t matter how much you are into the job and how good you are at it; no one is going to listen to you if you are being harsh.

The best thing you can do is stay positive with your words and keep doing you, keep doing the job right by consistently working out, training, and being the go-to firefighter that you are, and if you do it with a smile on your face and a heart to serve, they just might go to you for advice.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
