Commitment. Many people do not understand the level of commitment that it takes to show up week after week to make sure that a Blues Jam such as the NCW Blues Jam comes off.

When I first started hitting up jams in Los Angeles in the early 1980's I had no clue. Having run Jam nights for well over 20 years, I pretty much saw and did all of it. A Jam is meant to be an opportunity for creative discourse. People who normally pass each other driving to their gigs can get an opportunity to work out musical ideas together. I am thankful that I had women in my life who supported me at these jams I was involved in hosting. Mike Bills took on the hosting of the NCW Blues Jam after Vaughn Jensen was unable to do so. Several people wanted a different arrangement and pushed for a move to Badger Mountain. So instantly the jam nights went from 2-3 a month at one place to 4-5 a month at two different places. Mike has done his time in the hot seat and it's time for someone else to step up and take this on. It will give you a greater appreciation of the works people like Mike put in every week making sure you all have a place to be creative.

Playing nice with others. Could apply in all aspects of ones life but I want to talk specifically about on the bandstand. We musicians can be a real ego driven lot. We have our favorites and get get upset when we get stuck playing with that guy or that gal instead of our buddies. I am guilty of this sometimes myself so humor me as I write this. I recently attended a local jam. Got there early and came prepared. First set, was a local musician / vocalist and the house band doing some blues standards. Second set, was a female vocalist and then the same musician again with another half hearted set of blues. Third set, was a local guitarist and vocalist. Finally I got my chance to play. I was prepared to walk the other musicians through some cool new tunes I had. The jam host had other plans. He put me together with a local bass player and his drummer girlfriend to back a country and western singer. She specifically wanted to do four songs and we played them well, even though I had hoped to do other R&B music that day. That four song set was the last time I got to share the stage with the bass player, Bill Green as he died suddenly and unexpectedly yesterday. So playing music I really didn't want to do will now turn out to be a cherished memory. The moral is when we get on that bandstand, all the other stuff goes away and we make the absolute best of that few minutes we get to do our thing as we have no guarantee of anything beyond that.

Just got word from Badger Mountain Brewing that due to staffing issues, they will only have food and drink service inside tonight. The jam will still be outside.

The jam continues tonight, September 5th at Badger Mountain Brewing. This is one of the rare months when we play there twice in a row because August had 5 Mondays, and this week we’re starting the pattern over for September at Badger. Come out and play some blues with other musicians.

Local musician and former bandmate Steve Barone posted something yesterday about dynamics and volume on stage. With his permission I copied and shared it on my timeline. What separates the wanna be from the real musician is the ability to listen to what the rest of the band is doing, sit within the mix and add to the song. When I was coming up as a bassist in Detroit, every body wanted to play like Stanley Clarke or Louis Johnson. A lot of slapping and a million notes. The elders back then taught me that you need to know when to play and when not to play. I got a lot of work in bands and studios by knowing this. You have to play your part for the song to work. Playing over the vocalist or soloist is never the right thing to do. Learn to play within the constraints of the song and your playing will steadily improve.
