The cicadas are coming! Many midwestern and southeastern states can expect a "Double Brood" of cicadas this year, which means two separate cicada broods will emerge from underground following their 13- and 17-year cycles. Because of their mathematically offset emergences, both broods only co-emerge like this once every 221 years!

Fortunately, the cicada broods won't overlap much geographically. . . but Illinois sure will be loud this year! More at Almanac.com/Cicadas

We have a two part weather hazards forecast. First off, rain and embedded thunderstorms are expected later today out ahead of a strong cold front. There will be a potential for some severe weather, mostly south and west of our local area.

Behind the frontal passage that will occur overnight, colder air will invade the Southern Appalachians late tonight, with lowering snow levels.

By sunrise Friday, snow showers will be flying across the mountains, with accumulations across the higher elevations. As additional upper level energy moves across the region Friday night, we expect some light accumulations all the way to the valley floor after dark.

Snow showers taper to flurries and end on Saturday. Moderating temperatures are slated for Sunday.
