The Baltimore Orioles' shortstop plays in his 2,131st consecutive game, breaking Lou Gehrig's record which had stood since 1939. Ripken will continue his streak for three more years, ending it in 1998 after 2,632 games played over 16 years.

Black formal wear and military khaki meet on the deck of the USS Missouri battleship as a signing ceremony ending WWII gets under way. The Japanese foreign minister signs surrender documents, with General Douglas MacArthur signing for the Allies at the close of history's most destructive war.

History's most destructive war dawns with a massive invasion.
In WWII's opening salvo, Hitler's armed forces descend on Poland with blitzkrieg force and, getting assistance from the Soviet Union, will decimate the country's archaic military, controlling the nation within a month. Per their Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, Germany and the USSR will divide up the conquered territory.
