Savannah, Georgia has held a St Patrick's Day parade since 1824, one of the oldest in the United States.

The Hibernian Society of Savannah was founded in 1812 by Irish immigrants who wanted to help new arrivals find work and shelter. By the middle of the nineteenth century the Irish were one of the largest immigrant groups in the city, working on the docks, the railroads and the cotton warehouses and filling its Catholic parishes.

Each March the city turns green, with its squares and fountains dyed to match. What began as a modest gathering of homesick men has become part of how Savannah describes itself.
