The Fussfungle: PA’s Forgotten Cocktail
One of the most unusual cocktails in Pennsylvania history was born right here in the Monongahela Valley.
The Fussfungle was created by the Slavic communities of McKeesport around the turn of the 20th century. A mixture of whiskey, burned brown sugar, molasses, and water, it became so popular that newspaper accounts from 1902 reported on the drink's growing reputation far beyond Western Pennsylvania.
While the original recipe has largely been lost to history, modern interpretations often feature rye whiskey, honoring the spirit of the Monongahela Valley and Pennsylvania's rich whiskey-making tradition.
At Liberty Pole Spirits, we love celebrating the stories, people, and traditions that helped shape Pennsylvania whiskey culture. Stop by the Meetinghouse and experience a taste of one of our region's most fascinating, and nearly forgotten, cocktail traditions.
