To the Fallen Soldier:

Come and sit with me.

Let's sit by the water and share some coffee together, just like old times. It will be like nothing has changed; we can swap stories of how foolish we used to be, how excited we would get when we knew we'd meet again.

I'd be happy to just sit and listen to your words; the tenor in your voice and that unique way you express yourself. What I would do to hear your stories again.

When I think of seeing you there smiling, my heart beats with joy. I would love to feel that warm hug or even a hand shake.

Let's talk about our dreams, what we want and who we aspire to be.

Really, I wouldn't mind even sitting with you in silence ; your presence with me is more than enough. It's all I really want, and this weekend I remember you. I wish you were here and I'm sad that you're gone. This weekend let's just imagine we're sitting at the table again, celebrating life, friendship and love.

I miss you.

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” — John 15:13

I won't pretend to know what it's like to be a soldier at war. I have never seen combat, I'm not formerly or currently enlisted in any branches of service. If you put a gun in my hand, I wouldn't even know how to use it.

What I do know, is the tug I feel at my heart when I think of the men and women who went into the trenches for us, and never returned. I struggle to grasp the depth of sacrificial love that one must have in order to walk into frightening circumstances with the realization that this may be their last day.

During this Memorial Day weekend we come together as family and community to celebrate sacrificial love. While fighting for our country, we have lost countless men and women, whose enduring loyalty and dedication to country and loved ones was displayed in a way we must promise never to forget.

May our brave soldiers be reverently remembered through the weekend and always. Let's imagine their presence in our cities, streets and homes as we celebrate them. Let us set the table for the soldier, never forgotten and always remembered.

Perhaps we can take a lesson from that loving kindness. They not only did it for the people they knew and loved, but they did it for strangers who would never know them. Let's spread that same kindness to those we come across this weekend.

Ginger Gehres Biography:

"Ginger was born into a family of creative people. Her Mother was a formally trained dancer and loved crafting, her father a talented builder and wood turner. Ginger’s Grandmother, Twyla, was a professional oil painter and started teaching her to draw, paint, and “see” the world in detail at a very early age. Art became her passion and is, as she says, “part of her DNA.”

Ginger has had many years’ experience creating with oils, acrylics, pencil, markers, ink, computer graphics, and scratchboard. Using all these mediums in her professional career.

She is a multi-award winner on both local, national and international levels. Among them were the David Shepherd Wildlife “Artists of the Year Award, First Time Entrants Award” in 2022, the Artist Magazine’s “One of 10 Winners over 60” Artist Competition in 2020, and a PBS feature documentary about artists with disabilities in 2018.

She first discovered scratchboard art in 2012 and became a Master Scratchboard Artist with the International Society of Scratchboard Artists in 2015. Gehres still enjoys using the medium to express her love of wildlife and nature. She currently resides in North Carolina with her husband, Jo, and their pup, Mister Peepers."
