Knock knock knocking on Heaven’s Door: Our annual May skin-contact menu is back and banging 🎸

As you may (or may not!) know, nearly all wine starts white—it’s time on the skins that take us down to Paradise City, where the grass is green and the wines are pretty!

🌹 Rosé winemakers wanna watch red wines bleed… off the skins early, leaving wine anywhere from a pale salmon (like a Provençal rosé) to a deep rouge (almost a chilled red vibe).
🧡 Orange wines need white grapes with just a little patience, hanging out on the skins anywhere from 12 hours (for a kiss of texture) all the way to three months (think tannic, grippy Georgian wines).

With a skin-contact list as long and luxurious as Slash’s guitar solos, these refreshing wines are just what the longer, warmer DC days call for. So tease your hair, practice your best Axl Rose impersonation, and meet us on our patio to kick off the summer. Cause remember, nothing lasts forever, and we both know menus change.

Ladies and gentlemen… in this corner, we have the April Maxwell menu drop—wines shaped by glaciers and ready to rumble.

Long before vines took root, glaciers were putting in WrestleMania-level work—carving many of the landscapes where these wines are grown today. In the Finger Lakes, they gouged out deep lakes that help soften harsh winters and moderate the growing season; in Valtellina, they cut steep slopes that let vines soak up every possible hour of sun. As they moved, they left behind rocky, well-draining soils in places like Alto Adige. Today, in cool, dry places like Patagonia, glacier-fed rivers make viticulture possible at all.

In the glass, these wines are all energy: bright acidity, crisp fruit, stony edges, and flavors that feel more chiseled than plush. Think electric Riesling, alpine reds with a little crunch and attitude, and Pinot Noir that’s more precision than power. These are bottles with lift, snap, and just enough cool-climate drama to keep things interesting—the kind of wines that come in with a bodyslam of freshness and finish clean.

So climb on into the ring for the main event—we’ll be pouring these glacier-shaped beauties all month long.

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… the February Maxwell Menu Drop! 🦸‍♂️✨

This month we’re celebrating Superhero Winemakers — origin stories, hidden powers, and the producers who resisted the snap of homogenization to transform overlooked grapes and regions into something extraordinary.

Like Professor X recognizing power where others saw misfits, these winemakers looked inward — to their homes, histories, and native grapes — and saw something worth championing. At a time when the global wine world rewarded sameness, they chose instead to stand behind the varieties and regions that shaped them. The result? Wines that feel distinctive, rooted, and alive — and that invite drinkers to experience something genuinely different.

Wine Avengers, assemble!

🕷️ Spider-Man — Raúl Pérez | Mencía, Bierzo
Your friendly neighborhood winemaker. Working parcel by parcel with old vines in Bierzo, Pérez revealed how expressive and site-driven native Mencía can be when handled with care. We love these wines for their lifted aromatics, freshness, and savory elegance — reds that feel alive, transparent, and endlessly drinkable.

🛡️ Captain America — Mastroberardino family | Campania & Mt. Vesuvius
The principled guardian. When much of Italy turned toward international varieties, Mastroberardino stayed the course, preserving Campania’s native grapes and volcanic vineyard heritage. These wines bring volcanic energy, savory minerality, and structure without heaviness — deeply rooted, expressive wines that feel timeless but never old-fashioned.

🔮 Doctor Strange — Lyrarakis Wines | Dafni, Crete
The master of lost knowledge. Lyrarakis helped rescue Dafni, a native Cretan grape on the brink of extinction, and reintroduced it as something vibrant and expressive. Expect unmistakable herbal aromatics, a savory edge, and refreshing lift: wild, Mediterranean, and lightly floral.

The fun part? You don’t need a cape to join the resistance. All it takes is choosing curiosity over familiarity — letting us pour you something you may not recognize, but will absolutely remember. This month’s menu is an invitation to explore these worlds, one glass at a time. 🦸‍♀️🍷

Yippee-ki-yay, wine lovers! 🍾 Our January menu is here and chock-full of lower-alcohol options. Because taking a lighter touch doesn’t mean quitting the party entirely — you don’t need to throw Hans Gruber off Nakatomi Plaza to accomplish your goals. 🏢💥

Lower-ABV wines aren’t just about less alcohol. They tend to be lighter-bodied and more elegant than their blowsier pals — think Bruce Willis crawling through the vents, rather than flashing LAPD vehicles crowding the parking lot. Lower alcohol levels come from some combination of grape choice (varieties that reach phenolic ripeness at lower sugar levels), growing conditions (less heat or sun), and farming decisions (harvesting earlier). 🎯 These wines show up in lots of styles — chilled reds, elegant Pinots, alpine whites — balancing lower alcohol with texture, phenolics, bright acidity, and a fragrant nose.

The result? Wines that feel complete and pair beautifully with lighter January fare (try the trout dip with a salty white and see what we mean). ✨ An elegant solution — “shoot the glass!” but without sending you scrambling for new shoes. And, with less alcohol muting your senses, your palate stays fresh, making it easier to taste broadly, linger longer, and explore a few different styles.

So grab a glass, try something unexpected, and see how far clever tactics can take you. Come out to the coast, have a few laughs. And, of course: Welcome to the party, pal! 🥂
