Today was the official kickoff of the Made in DC Retail Residency, curated by Steadfast Supply | 🛍Gift Shop🛍 and supported by DC Department of Small & Local Business Development (DSLBD)

I am super grateful to be part of the FY2026 cohort of local DC makers and the opportunity to gain practical retail, marketing, and business-development support and mentorship.

Our featured products:

Maame Water Ginger B**r - named after the water goddess known in Africa, the Americas, and other parts of the world for her powers of seduction, fertility, wealth, and desire. Ginger root is globally recognized for its natural healing powers and bite.

Busy Body Bissap - This beverage, made from hibiscus flowers, is known by many names - Bissap in Senegal, Zobo in Nigeria, Sobolo in Ghana, and Sorrel in the Caribbean Islands. In Krio/Pigeon (Sierra Leone and rest of West Africa) a busy body is someone always on the go, translates to a female hustler, which has a negative connotation but we are turning the meaning around to salute women who are about their business by naming this beverage Busy Body Bissap.

A Celebration of African Fashion, Food & Culture

More than a traditional pop-up, this event is envisioned as an immersive cultural experience that introduces guests to the remarkable stories behind Nigeria's historic textiles. Through curated fashion, educational storytelling, artisan-made accessories, and African-inspired cuisine, visitors are invited to experience Africa through design, craftsmanship, and community.

The collection features contemporary clothing and accessories handcrafted from traditional Nigerian textiles including Kofar Mata Indigo, Adire, Aso-Oke, Akwete, Saqi, and Funtua cotton. Each garment is accompanied by beautifully designed story cards highlighting the history and origin of the fabric, allowing guests to connect with the artisans and traditions behind every piece.

Had an amazing time showcasing Sierra Leone at this month’s Taste It series with !

The menu was a journey through the diversity of Sierra Leone and its many tribes, from the Fullah to the Temne people, as well as the European influences brought during colonization by the Portuguese, French, and British.

We love this series because it aligns with our mission of highlighting the connections across the African Diaspora through food. We were especially excited for the engaging conversations around Jollof—without starting any new wars. While Jollof traces its origins to the Wolof people of Senegambia (with some related tribes also found in Sierra Leone), its culinary descendants and relatives can be seen in dishes like Jambalaya and Red Rice of the Louisiana and the Carolinas, and even Paella in Spain.

We look forward to continuing the conversation and building community and culture—one dish at a time.
