Today we celebrate the Happy Heavenly Birthday of one of the most important figures in music history, Les Paul.

June 9, 1915 – August 12, 2009

While many fans know Les Paul as a brilliant guitarist, his influence reaches far beyond the stage. He helped revolutionize modern music through his pioneering work in recording technology, multi-track recording, overdubbing, and the development of the legendary Gibson Les Paul guitar. Without his innovations, the sound of rock music as we know it might never have existed.

As a performer, Les blended jazz, country, pop, and swing into a unique style that inspired generations of guitarists. Alongside his wife, Mary Ford, he created a string of hit records during the 1950s and demonstrated recording techniques that were years ahead of their time.

From the soaring solos of the 1970s to the arena rock giants of the 1980s and beyond, countless musicians relied on ideas and instruments that Les Paul helped bring to life. His fingerprints are on virtually every era of modern music.

Today we remember a true innovator, a master musician, and a man whose creativity changed the world forever.
